Doing an apprenticeship means that you go to work and earn money whilst also studying for a related qualification. You can do an apprenticeship from 16 onwards. Whilst sectors such as business, IT and engineering tend to dominate apprenticeships there are increasingly options across all sectors. The application process may be lengthy and will not always follow the academic timetable so you need to keep your eye out for apprenticeships all year round.
Apprenticeships start at Level 2 with a college course. Advanced Apprenticeships at Level 3 would also include study at college whereas degree apprenticeships (which can take up to 5 years) will include a university degree - with your fees paid.
Companies only advertise apprenticeships when they have vacancies. So whilst large national / multinational companies might have regular apprenticeship programmes starting in September, the availability of local apprenticeships depends on local vacancies. There is usually a very short window between apprenticeship applications opening and closing.
