Why Bring STEAM to YCSD?
Early exposure to engaging science, technology, engineering and math experiences that are integrated with the Arts will empower YCSD scholars to join the next generation of designers, engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, scientists, researchers, creators, entrepreneurs, etc.
Girls, nonbinary students, and scholars of color need to experience and see limitless possibilities beyond traditional opportunities
Representation matters
The average payout of STEM jobs is 70% more than the national average
The demand for STEM trained employees is the fastest and highest paid career
The mission of Y-STEAM is to provide engaging problem-based learning experiences and a rigorous curriculum that inspire innovation, inquiry, critical thinking, and collaboration. The integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics will prepare YCSD scholars for personal and professional success.
What is STEAM?
STEAM education empowers and immerses students and educators in inquiry, dialogue, problem-solving, and experiential learning that deepens understanding of all fields in their educational experience. Neuroscience shows that practices used effectively in STEAM education can improve cognitive performance (Chapman and Kirkland, 2013).
Middle School is such a delicate juncture for scholars. Interested scholars at Chaney and East can request to be assigned to a STEAM cohort. Space is limited. Teachers can collaborate with STEAM teachers so that every scholar has an opportunity to experience the STEAM approach.

The pathway to STEAM is exciting:
STEAM is an integrated approach to learning which requires an intentional connection between standards, assessments, and lesson design/implementation
True STEAM experiences involve two or more standards from Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and the Arts to be taught AND assessed in and through each other
Inquiry, collaboration, and an emphasis on process-based learning are at the heart of the STEAM approach
Utilizing and leveraging the integrity of the arts themselves is essential to an authentic STEAM initiative
Scholars will ask/identify, imagine/research, design/plan, create/build, test/experiment, improve/revise and present
