This Privacy Policy explains how Meanwhile collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use the Meanwhile mobile application and related services (collectively, the “Service”).
By using Meanwhile, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
If you create an account, we may collect information such as:
Email address
Username
Profile photo
Account identifiers
Account settings and preferences
Some portions of Meanwhile may be available without creating an account.
We collect content you choose to submit to Meanwhile, including:
Moment photos
Captions
Comments
Categories and live tags
Votes and other interactions
Reports
Profile information
Some User Content is intended to be visible to other users as part of the Service.
Meanwhile is a location-based service.
If you grant location permission, we may collect your device's location when necessary to provide location-based features, such as displaying your location on the map, re-centering the map, or sharing a Moment.
Meanwhile requests foreground location access only and does not require background location access for its standard functionality.
You may browse the Service without granting location permission, although certain location-dependent features will not be available.
Here Moments
When you create a Here Moment, the location associated with that Moment may be displayed to other users with relatively high precision.
Posting a Here Moment may therefore reveal where you were when the Moment was created.
Nearby Moments
When you create a Nearby Moment, Meanwhile uses your actual location to generate an approximate or randomized displayed location.
Other users receive the approximate location rather than the precise posting coordinates.
We design this feature so that precise coordinates used to generate a Nearby Moment are not provided to other users.
No location-obfuscation technique can guarantee complete anonymity, however, particularly when a photo, caption, surroundings, or other information independently reveals a location.
Meanwhile may store certain preferences locally on your device, including:
Selected theme
Last map position
Map zoom level
Other interface preferences
For example, Meanwhile may remember the last area of the map you viewed so that it can restore that area the next time you open the app without unnecessarily requesting your current location.
We may automatically collect technical information necessary to operate, secure, diagnose, and improve the Service, such as:
Device and operating-system information
App version
Device or installation identifiers
IP address
Crash and diagnostic information
Performance information
Network information
Basic usage events and interactions
The exact information collected may depend on the services and technologies used by the production version of Meanwhile.
We may use information to:
Provide and operate Meanwhile
Create and manage accounts
Display Moments and other User Content
Provide map and location-based functionality
Process comments, votes, points, streaks, and rankings
Determine content visibility and relevance
Remember preferences
Moderate User Content
Process reports and enforce our rules
Detect spam, fraud, abuse, and security threats
Diagnose crashes and technical problems
Analyze and improve the Service
Communicate with users regarding their accounts or the Service
Comply with applicable laws and legal obligations
We may also use aggregated or de-identified information for analytics, research, product improvement, and other legitimate purposes where permitted by law.
Meanwhile is designed around sharing Moments with other users.
Depending on the feature, information visible to others may include:
Username
Profile photo
Moment photos
Captions
Comments
Categories and live tags
Vote counts
Points and streaks
Ranking information
Whether a Moment is Here or Nearby
The displayed location of a Moment
Time remaining before a Moment expires
Your private account information, such as your email address, is not intended to be displayed publicly through your profile.
Your own private post history may be available to you through your account without being publicly exposed through another user's profile.
We do not sell your personal information.
We may disclose information in the following circumstances.
We disclose information that you intentionally make available through public or shared features of Meanwhile, such as Moments, comments, usernames, and displayed Moment locations.
We may use third-party providers to operate the Service, including providers of:
Cloud infrastructure
Databases
Authentication
Media storage, processing, optimization, and delivery
Maps
Analytics
Crash reporting
Security and abuse prevention
These providers may process information on our behalf as necessary to perform their services.
We may preserve or disclose information when we reasonably believe doing so is necessary to:
Comply with law, regulation, legal process, or lawful governmental requests
Enforce our Terms or other policies
Investigate fraud, abuse, security incidents, or violations
Protect the rights, safety, and property of users, Meanwhile, or others
Respond to emergencies involving potential harm where legally permitted
If Meanwhile is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, restructuring, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.
Meanwhile may request permission to access your location while you are using the app.
Location access is highly recommended for the core local discovery experience, but it is not required simply to browse Meanwhile.
Without location access:
You can still explore the map
You can still view Moments
You can use non-location-dependent features
Your current-location puck will not be available
Re-center will require location access
Creating a Moment will require location access
You can change location permissions through your device settings.
Meanwhile does not need continuous background location tracking for its standard functionality.
Meanwhile may request camera and/or photo-library permissions so you can create or select content.
We access photos or camera functionality only in connection with features that require them and subject to the permissions provided by your operating system.
Photos you choose to post may be uploaded to our servers or media service providers and made visible through the Service.
Remember that photos themselves can reveal information about you or your location even when precise coordinates are hidden.
Meanwhile is designed around temporary public Moments.
A Moment may disappear from the public map after its applicable visibility period, such as the configured duration for Here or Nearby Moments.
Expiration from the public map does not necessarily mean immediate deletion from all systems.
We may retain information for a reasonable period when necessary for:
Account functionality
Your private post history
Moderation and abuse investigations
Reports
Security and fraud prevention
Backups and disaster recovery
Legal compliance
Resolving disputes
Enforcing our agreements
Cached copies may also persist temporarily in content-delivery systems.
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy or as required or permitted by law.
You may initiate deletion of your Meanwhile account using the account-deletion functionality provided within the app.
When an account is deleted, we will delete or de-identify personal information associated with the account as required by applicable law, subject to legitimate retention needs such as:
Security and fraud prevention
Abuse and moderation records
Legal obligations
Dispute resolution
Enforcement of our agreements
Temporary backups
Information that has been aggregated or de-identified so that it can no longer reasonably be associated with you may be retained.
Content involving interactions with other users may require special handling where deleting it would affect records belonging to those users, subject to applicable law.
If you report another user or piece of content, we may collect information about the report, the reported content, the reporting account, and relevant surrounding activity.
We may preserve content that would otherwise expire or be deleted when reasonably necessary to investigate abuse, enforce our policies, protect users, or satisfy legal obligations.
Blocking another user may cause us to maintain information necessary to enforce the block.
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information.
However, no internet service, storage system, or method of electronic transmission is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.
