Football & Cheer

The Yough football team faced a challenging season, finishing without a win, but the players kept working hard under their coach’s leadership. The seniors leaving the team include Cooper Beers, Ilya Charletta, Joe Bibby, Kiddrix Mursch, Spencer Muir, and Aidan McDonough. Although the season didn’t end with a win, the friendships they built and the foundation they helped create will continue to shape the team’s future. The team’s captains, Joe Bibby, Kiddrix Mursch, Aiden Converso, Darius Stephenson, Atticus Kimmell, and Waylon Govi, helped lead the boys throughout the season. This year, our football team got a new head coach. Mr. Houseman played football for 12 years, including five years at Division I level at the University at Albany. He grew up in the Yough District, where he also played football. During the season, he worked to help his players grow, succeed, and reach their full potential. His hopes were to win games and compete for a section championship, but more importantly, to help his players become better athletes and successful young men. The cheerleaders also played an important role by keeping spirits high and supporting the team through every win and loss. Their energy and encouragement helped keep the boys motivated all season long. The cheer team’s beloved senior captains, Cailyn Sanner is head captain, and our co-captains are Sierra and Camryn, will be greatly missed as they leave behind lasting memories and traditions.

Although their playoff run ended in the first round with an overtime loss, the girls showed dedication and determination throughout the season. Their hard work and commitment helped make this season one to remember. The team also had a standout first-year goalie, Brooke Kowalski, who made a significant impact throughout the season. The Yough cross country team had a successful, fulfilling season filled with determination and hard work. This season, all runners have pushed themselves to qualify for the WPIAL finals. Coach Newlin reflected on the season, saying, “It was tough with a small team, but everyone made lots of improvement, and even when the weather was terrible --with all the rain and heat! But nothing stopped them from trying their best!”
Ms. Newlin made sure to give a big thank you to Captain Mason Gardner for helping the team all season, and also the managers, Konnor Skewis and Kevin Hosey, for everything they have done to help the team. Despite tough weather days and a small team, the Yough Cross Country Team remained a very supportive community with a strong work ethic. Their strong dedication to each other and running is something to be proud of, and they have plenty to build on for next season.

Trap

The Yough trap team had a successful year and a remarkable fall season! 8 shooters placed in the top ten at conference competition. Graidyn Hurst led the team to a remarkable first-place standing, followed by Ethan Baker in 2nd place. The top 10 finishers were Ethan Kerber in 6th place, Aiden McDonough in 7th place, both Kiara Sudaric and Mackenzie Smartnick tied in 5th place, Shelby Hoyle in 7th place, and Hannah Baker in 9th place. Shooter Ethan Baker reflected on the team by saying, “Season went great, practices went pretty well, practices were held two times a week, and we had lots of people in the top ten conferences. I think there are a lot of great shooters on this trap team, and I am worried about the seniors leaving the team because we have 12 people graduating this year. All of the younger kids shot very well this year too, though. Overall, I think it's been very successful this year.” With a successful and strong performance from both experienced shooters and younger shooters, the Yough trap team had a phenomenal and accomplished season. Although the team is saying goodbye to 12 seniors, the success of the younger shooters provides plenty of reason to look forward to next season.
