Unless it is COVID-related, Remote Learning is for the entire time from now until March Break or post March Break - June
Dear Students and Parents
I have inserted above the timetable that we will follow for the next 8 days, ending Friday, January 14th. Please note that the day begins with what we have called Period 5. This refers to the single 40 minute period that shows up in your current timetable at the end of the day on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 2pm on Thursdays and Fridays.
As with past remote learning periods I wish to remind families of the expectations that we have for students during remote learning.
1) Dress for a school day; students, you may wear casual clothing, but please do not come to class in your pyjamas.
2) Create a learning space that puts you in the mind of working - ideally at a desk in a quiet room; .
3) Turn your camera on unless you have been specifically allowed to turn the camera off. It is important that we create a sense of social engagement in which the teacher can observe whether learning is taking place.
4) Show up for classes on time and give your best effort to fully engage in discussions and other learning activities.
As well, I wanted to share again this video created by the Student Support team, to help explain how students can best approach this time of virtual learning. In addition, I recommend that you consider connecting with Mr. Carpenter or Ms. Smart (grades 10 -12) or Ms. Rhemtulla (grade 9), our Learning Strategists, who will make themselves available to work with students to develop plans to assist them through this period of virtual learning. All members of the Wellness team are available should you wish to chat - we recommend that you email one of them to set up an appointment. As well, a Wellness Centre virtual drop-in meeting will run each day from 2:30 until 3:30pm.
Both Mr. Hanna and Ms. Bauld will be available to discuss either university applications or course options for the upcoming year. Please be in touch with Ms. Diano (vdiano@yorkschool.com) to set up an appointment.
Finally, as we all adjust to virtual learning, we will let co-curriculars take a back seat, anticipating that we would start them back up on January 17th. Mr. DeMarinis will, in the interest of your health and wellbeing, run a series of virtual training sessions. He will be sending out information on this program shortly.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
All the best,
Mr. Hamilton
Virtual Workspace
Please note that the Wellness Centre will continue to run York Workspace, where you can get help as you work on assignments - but now it's virtual!
Workspace is a great place for students to drop in when they could benefit from speaking to a Learning Strategist or teacher about how to tackle an assignment or their overall workload. It is also the place for students who have overdue assignments. All students who have overdue assignments are required to join their grade's virtual workspace at 2:15pm each day for an hour where they will work on finishing up that assignment.
