The district provides high standards of education, self-esteem and safety for all its students. The wearing of uniform school attire is integral to providing and maintaining these standards.

Community Progress Council and Family First Health are partnering with Hannah Penn K-8 Elementary to offer an exciting program for students called the Walking School Bus. In an effort to encourage students to walk safely to school, increase students attending school daily, arriving on time and to decrease morning traffic around the school, we are organizing adult volunteers to walk with students along designated routes. Encourage your child to walk with us!
What is a Walking School Bus (WSB)?
A walking school bus is made up of one or more volunteer ‘walk leaders’, who pick up students at designated stops along a specific route and walk them to school.
When is Walking School Bus?
Walking School Bus will run rain-or-shine each Monday morning beginning Monday, August 22, 2022 and continuing through the end of the school year.
Who are the ‘walk leaders’?
The walk leaders are employees who work at Hannah Penn K-8 who commit to co-leading the WSB. You will recognize staff from Communities of Hope and Family First Health!
How does it work?
The WSB will designate specific stops for children to gather. The walk leader will start at the beginning of the route and pick up children along the way to school. The WSB will pick up at stops on various corners in the neighborhood. The stops will be:
8:00 a.m.: Corner of E. College Avenue and S. George Street
8:05 a.m.: Corner of E. College Avenue and S. Duke Street
8:10 a.m.: Corner of E. College Avenue and S. Queen Street
8:15 a.m.: Corner of E. College Avenue and S. Pine Street
8:20 a.m.: Corner of S. Pine Street and Liberty Court

Community Progress Council's Early Childhood Education programs offer Head Start classrooms in Hannah Penn K-8 Elementary School.
Our programs provide Early Learning opportunities for children and comprehensive support to families. Our programs support parents as teachers and help them understand their child’s development and help parents make progress toward their own goals. Head Start offers 2 classrooms in Hannah Penn. Additionally, Community Progress Council offers Wrap-Around Childcare at a low-cost or through your CCIS subsidy to help support working parents with preschool aged children at Hannah Penn. Truancy Prevention
Check & Connect partners a student and their family with a mentor for a minimum of two years. Together, the mentor and family focus on helping the student:
improve their school attendance record
be more attentive in class
learn valuable problem-solving skills
keep their parents or guardians updated on their academic progress
talk through personal concerns
learn to work through conflict constructively

In our 45th year of service, the York County Literacy Council (YCLC) continues its mission to teach literacy skills, in English, to empower adults for successful engagement in the home, workplace, and community.
YCLC provides classes for adults in York County, who are not able to read, write, perform basic math functions, speak and comprehend English. Instruction ranges from pre-literate to preparing to pass GED/HiSet® exam for those seeking to earn their High School Equivalency credential in the state of Pennsylvania. Health literacy, computer literacy, financial literacy and workplace literacy are also taught in classes and through workshops.
YCLC also trains volunteer tutors to provide one-to-one literacy tutoring to adult students. YCLC works with both native born and English as a Second Language Students.
We have GED classes to instruct students as they work to pass their GED/HISET exam. Beginning in May 2017, the York County Literacy Council extends its services to become the HiSET® High School Equivalency (paper-based) test site in York County. It is estimated there are approximately 40,000 adults in York County who are functionally illiterate. YCLC services are free and confidential. Read more about our programs here.
