The coyote agrees to accept your wedding ring and other valuables as payment and guides you across the desert. As you traverse the desert, you encounter a drug cartel. They demand an outrageous amount of money to cross their territory. You do not have the money, but the cartel demands that you call a relative in the U.S. to wire $3000 USD to their bank account.
You may not be shot by the drug cartel, and overall, you and the coyote have a much better chance of surviving. Once you leave the cartel’s territory, the experienced coyote has the know-how to evade border patrol and combat hunger and dehydration.
Your US relatives are not wealthy, and you will be asking them to use the money they need to support their family members.
If you are able to escape, your relatives will be able to keep the money they desperately need to support their families.
The chances of escape are slim: you are tied up and the cartel members are heavily armed. If you are successful, the cartel may kill the coyote, leaving you feeling responsible for his death. You will have to traverse the rest of the route alone.
