This was me practicing with colored pencils and turned into an eye opening piece.

What if some one were to rip open you stomach and expose your ribs? Then use whatever flowed out to water their flock but it kills them instead?

Done in April 2022, this is one of the first pieces I completed exclusively in pen. Looking back, this exploration has been essential to the recent development of my art practice, as I always have a gel pen on hand to sketch with.

Of course inspired by The Last Of Us in honor of the show release.
Just a funky little clicker.

This was mostly just an experimentation of shadows and shading. I ended up using a York pencil because I didn’t have anything else at the time. I’m still not sure how I feel about the final result but I do appreciate the depths I was able to capture.

A forest of well spun lies and tales. That could exist if you know what to look for.

Just a random red/pink leaved tree that was inspired by sakura (cherry blossom trees). Medium used: watercolor.

A painted piece of an eye for my art class. The focus was collage with the idea of "aging", that is why within the collage there are words like "century" and "retirement".

Piece made on some scratch paper thing... I don't necessarily know what it's called but, yeah. Also, I used ink to color in the leaves and bananas. My challenge with this piece was adding the egret in it because I'm not necessarily used to drawing animals.

The underside of a willow tree...
With a pink sky as the background.

This piece is a study in saturation and how rich colors can affect the mood of the work. It was a self-directed work to experiment with a new medium as well as depth and perspective.
Maya Brent-Nurse, 2023
This piece was a high-saturation class assignment that allowed me to experiment with monochromatic tones. This helped me with gradient skills and balancing colors. It details blue stairs in the town of Chefchaouen in the North of Morocco nicknamed "The Blue City."

This is an oil painting of a crow sitting on a book shelf, reading a book in the glow of a bare light bulb. One of its feet is outstretched as if it is about to turn the page, and the open book is resting on a stack of books on the far left of the shelf. This painting is exploring an unconventional way of portraying crows, which are usually seen as morbid and dark birds. I feel like this also represents the intelligence of these birds, which is often over looked. I also wanted this piece to feel very cozy, describing through an image the quite happiness of reading a good story, The book the crow is reading is inspired by one of my favorite childhood novellas, called the Epic of Alexandra.

This is a painting of a crow wearing a flower crown, with a broken necklace around its neck, and one of the beads in its mouth. The bird is surrounded by golden leaves on a red background, kind of imitating the style in which many royal portraits are painted. I was playing around with personification in this piece, asking myself what would happen if someone tried to make such a mischievous bird sit still for a portrait. I imagined the crow being interested in the jewels on the necklace, and trying to snatch one and as a result breaking the string and scattering the beads. I also feel like I intended there to be a subliminal message about freedom in this piece, a resistance of being forced to do something you don't want to do. The look in the crow's eye almost appears defiant to me.

During Ms. Berry's English V class one of our assignments was an identity project therefore this piece was inspired on the parts that build my identities. Personally my culture plays a great part in all of this which is why it is centered around my Mexican culture. Inspired by the Catrina my artwork is meant to show the various aspects that can build a single person's character.

The ocean is very dangerous and out of our control. I wanted to show how people try to fight nature and fail.
It is important for the world to understand that we need to work with our natural systems rather than disrupt or change them.
