Richard Ogden is a Professor of Linguistics at the University of York. He is a phonetician and conversation analyst whose work combines phonetic detail with conversation analytic methodology to investigate how people use aspects of speech to perform social actions such as turn-taking, agreeing, and complaining. He has worked on data in English, Finnish, and British Sign Language, among others. His recent research examines non-lexical vocalisations such as clicks, swallows, and laughter. He is currently principal investigator on the AHRC-funded project Breathing behaviour and non-lexical vocalisations in talk-in-interaction, which investigates how breathing and breathing-related sounds function in everyday conversation.
