The Heavy Rollers

The Heavy Rollers (played as the Phoenix Rollers during the 2021 season) have been in existence since the early noughties. 

Philip Warwick was the first captain, who was initially with Health Sciences and then moved to the Management School. Ted Hewitt then became captain with support from James Rossdale who brought along a number of players from the Yorkshire disability setup. The team was also widened out to include players without a departmental team from elsewhere across campus. James Chantry (Language and Linguistics) then took over in 2013 leading the side successfully until 2020. Our current skipper Charlie King (Careers) took over in the summer of 2021. 

In the early years of our existence, the Rollers struggled against the more established teams in the league. After several years of propping up the table gradually our fortunes improved and in 2015 we finished second. We then won our first TPT trophy in 2018 and regained the trophy in 2019. We finished a very creditable second in 2022.

Now ‘The Rollers’ are very much a cross-departmental side with no single clear home from across the University of York. We see this as a real asset as it helps people to make connections from all across the University campus. We have representation from Language and Linguistics, Politics, Health Sciences, YHEC, the Sports Centre and Maths to name but a few. We also welcome alumni and players from outside of the University. All our players enjoy a shared passion for social and fun cricket. 

Our main focus is the TPT but we also play occasional friendlies outside of the league.  We also like to go for a drink and several bags of Pipers Crisps in the Deramore after each game.
