If you are submitting your research project for ethical review externally, you should use this notification form to inform the committee of your application. In line with the University policy, internal ethics review is not a requirement where there is a commensurate external review process (e.g. NHS or a research intensive HEI). However, the committee may determine that internal review is necessary depending on the scale of the risk. In all cases applicants should subsequently email a copy of their ethics approval to socsci-ethics@york.ac.uk once they receive it.
If you are collecting data from NHS patients or staff, or Social Services employees or service users, you will need to apply for approval through the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS). See the IRAS website for further instructions. Research limited to involvement of staff as participants is exempt from a REC review within the UK Health Department Research. Therefore, internal ethical approval is required prior to the IRAS application seeking HRA approval.
Where projects transfer to York partway through, the committee should be notified of these projects (socsci-ethics@york.ac.uk) with details of what ethical review has already occurred, to determine if any further review is necessary.
