Welcome to the School for Business and Society, Management PhD programme!

The School for Business and Society provides an active, vibrant and collegiate postgraduate research community. We place a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research that engages with current key debates in policy, business and society. Our student body is truly international and our PhD programme offers high-quality training and a supportive collegial environment in which to pursue your passion for research.

As a doctoral student, the focus of your work will be an essentially independent research project, sometimes that can be a difficult path. We will provide training to equip you with skills in a wide range of research methods to support your growing expertise. You will be supported by two academic supervisors who share or complement your research interests, giving you expert guidance throughout your studies. Also here to support you are the PGR Team, which includes the Student Office Team, and myself; your student representatives; your subject group members; and, most importantly, your fellow research students. Do reach out for help when you feel the need.

Although a young school, we have graduated over 50 PhDs in Management, and at present about 60 students are pursuing their postgraduate research degrees with us. We have over 100 staff members engaging across a broad range of research disciplines to provide a rich intellectual environment. We strongly recommend you fully engage in this strong academic environment York provides, this includes research seminars, master classes, and a wide variety of social events. At this time of writing, both the School and the University at large are keenly aware that the situation with COVID-19 is a trying one, adding unpredictability to an already uncertain research endeavour. We would like to assure you that we will continue to strive to minimize the disruption caused. This may mean adjustments to programming that we would normally have, in particular for in-person events. Nevertheless, we are confident that we can continue to adapt and overcome together.
