York has a range of accommodation options to suit the needs of its many visitors. The NSC suggests that Short Course participants choose to stay near to the city centre or the University to make travel to and from both locations easier (see map at the end of this page). Whilst the NSC is unable to recommend accommodation, some suggestions are made below for options which are either often cheaper or where the NSC/University of York has a deal which Short Course participants (marked with an asterisk), Leaders, Course Co-ordinators or visiting academics can access. About the Accommodation: Franklin House is located on the UoY campus, very near to the NSC. It has 62 en-suite bedrooms on three floors (54 single rooms and 8 with double beds). Each room comes fully equipped with a TV, desk, storage and tea and coffee making facilities. Access is via a secure card system and the complex is monitored by University of York security. They do not offer breakfast, but guests may choose from a range of university cafes and restaurants. The closest, The Link, serves breakfast items from 7:30 a.m.

About the Accommodation: This is a newly refurbished 3 star hotel just outside York's city walls, close to the train station and near to the stops on the main bus route from the either the station or Nunnery Lane carpark to the University (numbers U1/U2).
Check in is at 3pm and check out is by noon on the day of departure. Breakfast is included with the NSC rate. The hotel can also organise dinner for you at Valentino's (situated opposite the hotel) upon check-in if required.

About the Accommodation: These 97 mini-apartments are equipped with a kitchen and workplace. Guests also have access to free laundry facilities and a gym. Roomzzz offers a free hot drink and croissant every morning between 6.30am and 10.30am. There is also a cafe with snacks and a selection of hot breakfasts and ready-made meals to purchase and warm up in your kitchen. Fruther information, including room sizes and capacity (for those considering sharing) can be found on the Roomzzz website.

About the Accommodation: The Travelodge on Hull Road is a low budget "hotel" with approx 40 rooms. Check in is 3pm and check out is by noon on the day of departure. No breakfast is included, but you can request a breakfast box (cornflakes, milk, flapjack, a pain au chocolat & juice) for £5.95. You will need to order and pay for this at the Travelodge reception. There is a pub (the Black Bull) next door, and a number of shops and cafes nearby, including those at the University. The nearest is the Link which serves breakfast from 0730. Note for groups: there is not a common communal space (lounge area) at the Travelodge.

Travelodge have some other budget hotels in York which are normally slightly more expensive than the Hull Road hotel. They can be worth checking as costs are based on demand. They are: Travelodge York Central Micklegate (3 star), York Central (2 star), and if you don’t mind a bit of a walk, York Central Layerthorpe (3 star).

The Premier Inn has three suitable locations in York: Blossom Street North (approx 100 rooms) and Blossom Street South (approx 91 rooms) which are a short walk from the Railway station just outside the city walls or York City Centre Layerthorpe (approx 180 rooms), a new hotel, slightly further out of the city. We suggest checking the price of these hotels to compare to Travelodge, but they are often slightly more expensive.

Price: Beds from approx £20 per pers per night (in shared dorms with bunk-beds, wi-fi).
About the Accommodation: Approx 140 beds spread across 23 rooms. A great city centre location in a Georgian Building: cheap and very simple. Some dorms have ensuite facilities, and they can be booked in their entirety i.e. by groups or 6 or 10, to get an even better rate. Breakfast is available at extra cost. Feedback for this option has been mixed, with some unhappy with the standard/level of cleanliness.
