The impact of pinyin and zhuyin tone diacritics on the perception of Mandarin tones by L1 English speakers.

For the first 9 months of my two years in Taiwan, I was a student at National Taiwan University (國立臺灣大學) where I studied Mandarin for three hours day, five days a week. It was in these classes, taught exclusively in Mandarin, that I developed my Chinese skills and interest in the zhuyin transcription system.

July 2022 Helping prospective students enrolled on the University's YorJourney programme to write a 1,500 word essay on a given topic. This involved co-ordinating with the YorJourney team; liaising with the students via The Ambassador Platform and providing feedback on scripts.
Reliability Analysis (July-August 2022) Analysis of automatically time-aligned transcripts for a project on the influence of mothers' speech on infants. This involved assessing the accuracy of forced-alignment on 10% of utterances in a corpus of mother-infant speech. PI: Prof. Tamar Keren-Portnoy (Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York).
CLAN Transcription Conversion (May-June 2023) Conversion of transcripts to CHAT files compatible with CLAN software. Transcripts were recorded with CLAN-compatible notation and errors were recorded in a transcription database. PI: Dr. Anna Brown (Department of Education, University of York).
Self-Paced Reading (November 2023-March 2024) Assisting with the set-up a self-paced reading experiment in Psychopy. Sentences were transferred into Psychopy and set up with corresponding comprehension questions and fillers. PI: Dr. Jelena O'Reilly (Department of Education, University of York).
Child-directed speech coding (January-August 2024) Assisting with coding of CDS in caregiver-infant interactions in Elan. Co-ordinating a team of transcribers to ensure consistent coding practice. PI: Dr. Catherine Laing (Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York
Clinic Based Education (April-July 2025) Data analysis for a clinic based education project at the University of York. Statistical analysis; data visualisation; clinic based education workshop at the UKSLCE Conference 2025.
August 2023 - May 2024 Assisting the Language and Linguistic Science department in its transition to an updated VLE platform. Ensuring module sites are properly populated and compliant with the university's commitment to accessibility.
June 2025 - September 2025 Developing materials for a departmental Massive Open Online Course (MOOC); writing video scripts and articles; recording video materials; building the course on the FutureLearn platform.
