Equality Champions’ Handbook

Introduction

The establishment of Equality Champions in each academic and professional support department is an important initiative for the University. Equality Champions support the aim of embedding good ED&I practice across the institution, while also helping to create a working and learning environment that is fair, welcoming and inclusive for all, enabling staff and students to fulfil their potential.

This Equality Champions’ Handbook seeks to provide Champions with relevant resources, information and central direction, ensuring that all are on a level playing field and supported in their roles. This document acts as a cover sheet or content page for the Equality Champions Handbook, breaking down the individual sections in a way that is easy to navigate and linking to other Google folders and/or documents that cover a wide range of information, which we hope will be useful for Equality Champions.

This document and the available resources it points to will be added to over time. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions you can contact us at equality@york.ac.uk

4. What guidance and resources are available to Equality Champions?

Within this section we have attempted to compile a working list of useful internal and externally produced ED&I resources and guidance that Equality Champions may find useful in expanding their knowledge and understanding of ED&I issues and learning more about specific areas.

To find out more visit the What guidance and resources are available to Equality Champions?’ webpage.

5. What does good ED&I practice look like?

In order to embed ED&I across the institution we need to learn from examples of what our colleagues do at a local level and to help with this we will be asking Equality Champions to contribute success stories and examples of good ED&I practice from their areas, so that we can showcase them in the What does good ED&I practice look like? webpage.

6. Sign-posting and support for Equality Champions

To enable Equality Champions to act as visible Champions and allies within their departments, we have provided a list of internal and external sources of support and contacts that may be useful for Champions’ themselves, as well as enabling them to sign-post to other relevant services.

For more information visit the Sign-posting and support for Equality Champions webpage.

7. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and Governance

In order to understand how their work feeds into the University’s institutional plan and activities around ED&I, it’s important that Equality Champions are aware of the established governance structures and the relevant strategies within the University that relate to ED&I. We have therefore created a folder that provides key information relating to the ED&I Committee (EDIC) and the ED&I Strategy, along with some resources relating to departmental level ED&I Groups and Committees that Champions may find helpful, such as example Terms of Reference for departmental groups and an example 0-12 month action plan.
