Marina Cantarutti and Sascha Schäfer represented the team at the event organised by the AHRC and DFG for all the projects funded during Round 7. The team was excited to learn further about this prestigious award and success rates, and we are grateful for the funding and the opportunity
Sascha Schäfer presented at the Phonetics Colloquium at UdS on April 22nd to the Speech Science team at Saarland University. The presentation discussed forensic applications of the work that the Brevit project will be doing, and explored the role of inhalaiton noises for forensic applications.
Marina Cantarutti represented the team as keynote speaker at the "Current trends in phonetic studies" roundtable, organised by the Faculty of Linguistics at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute on April 26. We're grateful to Larysa Taranenko for the kind invitation to share our work on laughter with the Ukranian academic community and beyond.
The York part of the team made two presentations at the Colloquium of the British Association of Academic Phoneticians at the University of Warwick to present the BREVIT project.
We've received great feedback and suggestions both on the work already done by the team and for the next steps of the project in a really collegial environment.

The Brevit team had two significant forms of participation at the IDS Mannheim this week at the AGF 2026 conference: Technology use and social interaction: New interactive practices, new data and methods.
Richard Ogden led a 3-hour workshop on "The phonetics of non-lexical vocalisations" for a diverse and enthusiastic group of participants studying all forms of human-human, human-machine, and human-animal interaction.
Marina Cantarutti represented the team on the first official presentation of the project to a CA audience with a methods input entitled "Enhancing our understanding of breathing behaviours in non-lexical vocalizations in interactions". The talk and the project were really well received, and we are excited to report back on our progress and findings as the project progresses.
The full team met face-to-face in Saarland University for two days of planning, getting familiar with the equipment, and sharing the decision-making process for the data collection and analysis. We are excited to see the progress we have made already, and we're looking forward to the next steps together.
Marina Cantarutti visited the Leibniz Centre for General Linguistics to train with Dr Susanne Fuchs, a highly recognised expert in breathing and speech. Over the course of two days, Marina learned to use the RespTrack equipment, made practice recordings, and shared inspiring conversations about respiratory dynamics and speech. The team is really grateful for the very warm welcome and generous support offered by Susanne and her team.
The team will be presenting an introduction to the project with some methodological questions at the 25. Arbeitstagung zur Gesprächsforschung (AGF) / 25th Conference on Discourse and Conversation Analysis: Technology use and social interaction: New interactive practices, new data and methods on 25-27 March 2026 at Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim.
The talk will be part of a session on methods, and is called: "Enhancing our understanding of breathing behaviours in non-lexical vocalizations in interactions". Book of abstracts.
Richard Ogden will be delivering a special workshop on the phonetics of non-lexical vocalisations". Description.
Two contributions from our team were accepted for the meeting of the British Association of Academic Phoneticians (BAAP 2026) at the University of Warwick!
