Martin says:
Andrea is known to most of us as a 4E (embodied, embedded, extended, enactive) cognition expert – but he is also a composer. The text for this piece are the words said to have been spoken by 16th century Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno when he was sentenced to be burned alive for his then heretical beliefs in an infinite universe and cosmic pluralism: Maiori forsan cum timore sententiam in me fertis quam ego accipiam ("Perhaps you pronounce this sentence against me with greater fear than I receive it"). I hear aspects of a dark ritual in the percussion writing and an increasingly terrified speaker – so don't expect an easy listen!
Hi, I am Andrea Schiavio. I am lecturer at the University of York (UK), and president of ESCOM - the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music.
I want to know what music cognition is and how it works. To do so I combine empirical and theoretical research inspired by recent approaches in the cognitive sciences.
