Training

What has been the main work of the YMCA Training Department in the past year?

The Workforce Development Group (WDG) which supports Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and training opportunities for YMCA practitioners has representatives from across Ireland working closely together to ensure equity in providing training opportunities across the movement.

A key task of the WDG group was to organise YMCA Ireland’s All Ireland Practitioners Conference which explored Laura Lundy’s model of participation with a view to applying this model across all local associations. YMCA Ireland have long been committed to the principles of participation and this particular model fits well with our ethos.

A significant amount of training has been delivered within the past year to young people, staff and volunteers. Some of the courses delivered have included:

Level 1 in Youth Work Practice aimed at young people moving into leadership

Reconciliation and Peace Peer programme while also aimed at young people moving into leadership has a particular emphasis on inclusion and equity

Personal Success and Wellbeing Level 2 has a focus on personal and social development for our young people.

The Level 2 Award and Certificate in Vocational Skills has a focus on a wide variety of skills that could be used to gain employment.

The level 2 Award in Mentoring Skills and Practice was delivered to a number of staff and volunteers who work on projects that employ this method.

Level 1 in Peer Mentoring was delivered to young leaders to add to their skills and support their volunteering.

Youth work training at OCN levels 2 and 3 have been delivered to a variety of learners across NI.

Level 2 in Youth Work Practice is delivered to international volunteers as part of their induction to Greenhill YMCA

Mental Health First Aid Training was delivered to staff and volunteers, building skills to spot the signs of a young person needing support with mental health issues and information on support available in their area.

Mental health in the Workplace was delivered to staff and volunteers to support them with information on how to support their own mental health and wellbeing and that of their colleagues. This is part of YMCA Ireland’s commitment to supporting ‘flourishing’ mental health for staff, volunteers and young people.

Autism and Sensory Processing Awareness training was offered to staff and volunteers across Ireland to develop skills and understanding in working with young people on the spectrum.
