Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) are a written, venue specific plan for how athletic trainers, administrators, coaches, and EMS will respond to certain emergency situations during sporting events. It provides a blueprint for how healthcare professionals and lay people can work together to prevent catastrophic injuries. For more information, please visit NATA.org.

Q: If my child has symptoms of a concussion after sustaining a hit to the head, will they be able to play or practice?
A: No. Texas State Law requires that any athlete that has symptoms of a concussion after sustaining a hit to the head must be removed from play and seen by a healthcare professional of their choice to be cleared to return to play.
Q: My child is suspected of having a concussion, should I take them to an Emergency Room (ER) or Urgent Care right away?
A: Not always. If the athlete exhibits Red Flag Symptoms, take them to the ER immediately. If they are not exhibiting Red Flag Symptoms, it is not necessary to go to the ER. Athletes should be seen by their Primary Care Physician (PCP) to be assessed and given an official diagnosis.
Q: My child's doctor states that they do not have a concussion. Will they have to complete the Return-to-Play (RTP) Protocol?
A: Yes. Texas State Law allows school districts to assemble a Concussion Oversight Team (COT) that will review and establish RTP Protocol guidelines. YISD's COT has decided that when an athlete sustains a hit to the head and then exhibits symptoms consistent with a concussion, the athlete will need to complete the RTP Protocol regardless of the athlete's physician note.
Q: Will my child have to miss school? What happens with their absences and missing work?
A: Sometimes athletes need to miss school for a limited time due to concussions. YISD has a Return-to-Learn (RTL) Protocol that can be utilized to assist the athlete recovering from a concussion. Your athletic trainer will guide you through this process if this is the case.
YISD utilizes Rank One to make sure all students, parents, and coaches are informed about inherent risks associated with sports as well as a platform to make sure all paperwork for the students is complete and accurate.
Students and parents/guardians are required to read through and acknowledge these risks along with completing other vital information and paperwork to be cleared for full sports participation each school year that they wish to participate in UIL sporting events.
YISD Policy states that all students must obtain a new physical each year in order to participate in UIL sporting events. Valid physicals for the school year are those that are dated after May 1st for the upcoming school year. If a student's physical is dated prior to May 1st, they will have to obtain a new physical in order to participate in sports for the upcoming school year.
All physicals are to be uploaded into Rank One prior to beginning sports participation.
