Exercise 1: Discuss readings

  • What is the impact of globalization on pollution? Refer to themes discussed in past units and this week's readings
    • e-waste in China
    • Transboundary pollution in the New River
    • What is the Kuznet's curve? Explain its pattern
  • Distinguish between transboundary pollution and transnational waste movement.
    • Why is transboundary pollution so difficult to stop?
    • Discuss the reasons and consequences of:
      • sending e-waste from MEDCs to Ghana and China (Basel Convention, 1989)
      • chemical waste in Somalia
      • the pollution of the New River

This section's case studies will be taken from the Core 2, Food and Health and Coasts units:

  • Define agro-industrialisation
  • Describe the global trend of meat consumption
  • Describe and explain the global trend of soybean production
  • Giving examples, what changes have happened in agricultural production and consumption over the past century?
    • Production, supply chain, producers, biotechnology
  • What are food miles? (Guinness p.103)
  • What has been the impact of improved transportation (and air freight) on food miles?
  • Identify the effects of agro-industrialization and changes in international production and consumption on the physical environment. (review from Food and Health and Core unit 2, and Guinness p. 94)

  • The green revolution
  • dependency on oil in agriculture

Part 2: Using this presentation, (YIS Only) explain the role of TNCs in the homogenization of landscape

Exercise 2: Rio Nueve Case Study

In groups, using the Windsor handout and the prescribed reading, you will create a short presentation and fact sheet for one of the following questions:

  1. Define maquiladoras. Discuss the reason for their creation in Mexicali, Mexico.
    • Name the TNCs and the environmental and safety regulations that influenced their choice of location
  2. Discuss the environmental consequences of maquiladoras, sewage and agricultural discharge into the New River.
  3. Describe the rise on environmentalism as a consequence of globalization
    1. Explain the role of the Calexico New River Committee in improving the condition of the New River

Part 2:

You will be split into 2 groups, each answering one of the following questions and sharing them with the class. Ensure to have 5-10 key vocabulary terms

  1. Draw a timeline describing the key points the growth of Greenpeace and environmental awareness in the past 50 years or so.
  2. Using specific, visual examples, explain the evolution of uniform urban landscapes
    • Consider: common commercial activity, structures, styles of construction and infrastructure
