FAQs

What is Shabbat?

Shabbat is the weekly holiday and day of rest for Jewish individuals. It is meant to be a time to rest and to recharge from the buzz and bustle of the week. Shabbat begins at sundown on Friday evening and it ends after sunset on Saturday evening. Check out this article to learn more!

Do I have to be Jewish to come to Shabbats or to receive Shabbags with YCP Hillel?

No, you do not have to be Jewish to participate! We welcome anyone and everyone who is interested in learning more about Judaism and Jewish culture.

What should I expect if I attend a Shabbat with YCP Hillel?

We will start with introductions and an opening activity to get everyone into a Shabbat mindset. Then we will go into a short service, saying and singing prayers typically said on Shabbat (some prayers are recited in Hebrew, but we always aim to provide transliteration). Next we will have a blessing over grape juice and braided bread called challah before we enjoy a meal together.

During Shabbat service, there is a different story from the Torah that we focus on and discuss. These stories can be applicable to our every day lives and they offer us an opportunity to reflect.

What if something comes up and I am unable to attend Shabbat, an event that I signed up for, or pick up a Shabbag that I signed up for?

Please contact Julianna Orkin, coordinator of Jewish Student Life, via email (jorkin@ycp.edu) or GroupMe and we'll make note/arrange an alternative time for you to pick up your Shabbag.

What if I have questions or concerns that are not addressed here?

Please feel free to send us an email at gordoncenter@ycp.edu and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
