Do SVN volunteer opportunities provide transportation?
The Spartan Volunteer Network is a hub for all types of volunteer engagement opportunities. Some of these opportunities have transportation provided, while others do not.
What transportation options are available for SVN projects?
Transportation availability options will vary from project to project. Here are some possibilities:
Community partner-provided transportation: Occasionally, Community Partners will provide transportation to and from the YCP campus. This is uncommon.
YCP-provided transportation: YCP provides volunteer transportation via shuttle, van, or bus for various SVN volunteer opportunities. Bus transportation is always provided (and required) for SpartanServe.
Carpools: In many instances, SVN volunteers are permitted to drive or ride in a carpool using a personal vehicle. Volunteers must sign a transportation waiver on the SVN portal before driving or riding in a carpool to/from a project. More information about carpooling is available in the next section.
Provide your own transportation: Some SVN volunteer opportunities can only accept volunteers who can provide their own transportation. This might include driving your own vehicle, finding a ride, using a rideshare service, biking, or walking. Volunteers must sign a transportation waiver on the SVN portal before driving their personal vehicle to/from a project. More information about personal vehicle use is available in the next section.
How do I know if an SVN volunteer opportunity will provide transportation?
SVN staff members work diligently to coordinate and verify transportation availability for SVN volunteer opportunities.
Once SVN staff members confirm transportation availability, they will update the project listing in the SVN portal and notify all volunteers who have already signed up for the project.
If you are unsure about transportation availability for a specific project, you can contact us at volunteer@ycp.edu.
What if I can't make it to a service project using the transportation option available?
As an SVN volunteer...
You are not required to participate in a community service project that can only accept volunteers who will drive themselves, drive others, or ride in a carpool using a personal vehicle.
You may be required by a YCP class, club, or program to complete a minimum number of service hours over time, but this will not require participation in a particular community service event.
You may be required by a YCP class, club, or program to participate in a particular community service event, but only if...
there is transportation provided by YCP or a Community Partner, or
the project is close to campus and it is reasonable to ask you to arrive to the project without vehicle transportation, or
the project has a remote or asynchronous option.
Am I required to drive myself, to drive for a carpool, or to ride in a carpool in a personal vehicle?
There are some specific projects that can only accept volunteers who can provide their own transportation.
As an SVN volunteer, you are not, and will not be, required to participate in a community service project that can only accept volunteers who will drive themselves, drive others, or ride in a carpool using a personal vehicle.
Am I allowed to drive myself, to drive others, or to ride in a carpool in a personal vehicle?
Not always.
In most instances, you will be permitted to drive yourself, drive others, or to ride in a carpool in a personal vehicle.
In some instances, including all SpartanServe events, you will not be permitted to drive yourself, drive others, or to ride in a carpool in a personal vehicle.
In some instances, including all SpartanServe events, you will not be permitted to participate in a community service event unless you travel to and from the event via a YCP-provided bus, van, or shuttle.
Do I need to sign something if I am driving myself, driving others, or riding in a carpool in a personal vehicle?
Yes. There is a one-time personal vehicle waiver in the Spartan Volunteer Network portal that must be signed by any SVN volunteer who plans to drive themself, drive others, or ride in a carpool in a personal vehicle.
Spartan Volunteer Network volunteers and Team Leaders are invited to become certified YCP van drivers. As certified drivers, they will be able to transport student volunteers to and from projects using college-owned 9-passenger vans.
How do I get certified to drive a YCP van for a service project?
Getting certified to drive a YCP van is easy! There are two steps involved.
Driving background check
In order to be granted access to operate a college-owned vehicle, you have to complete a driver history background check. Begin this process by filling out this Qualtrics Link.
After you fill out this form, you will receive a follow up email from Campus Safety that will let you know what your next steps will be for getting Van Driver Certified.
Certification course
Certification courses are 2 hours long and typically take place 1-2 times each month. They are facilitated by Campus Policy officers. Signups for these courses are available at this link.
What are my responsibilities as an SVN van driver?
SVN van drivers should reference the SVN Van Driver Checklist any time they are planning to transport YCP volunteers to and/or from a service project location using a YCP van.
How do I reserve a van for a project?
Check the van reservation calendar here. There are up to four vans that can be reserved.
Submit a van request form here. When prompted, enter CCE016 as the department.
Where should I park in York City?
We recommend that you review the York City Parking Garages & Lots website at this link. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is an interactive map that you can filter for the type of parking you'd prefer.
Are there parking garages that I should avoid if I am driving a YCP van?
Look for a sign at the entrance that shares the maximum vehicle height for the garage. Do not park in a garage with a maximum vehicle height of less than 7 feet. Otherwise, you will damage the top of the van.
Can I get reimbursed for parking expenses?
When volunteers are parking for a service project listed in the Spartan Volunteer Network portal, they may request for parking costs to be reimbursed. Here's how:
Do your best to park in a free parking zone.
If the only possible or practical option is to pay for parking, select a location that will provide you with a receipt for the parking fee.
Save your receipt.
Print and complete a reimbursement request form.
Include all relevant receipts. The Business Office will not approve a reimbursement request without receipts.
Submit your completed reimbursement request form, with all relevant receipts, to volunteer@ycp.edu, or to the SVN headquarters in the Humanities Center, room 125.
The DSI will review the request and sign the completed document if the request is approved. The DSI will either send the completed and signed form directly to the Business Office, or will return the completed and signed form to you, so that you can take the form to the Business Office. The Business Office will review the signed and completed form and the receipts. If they determine that the reimbursement request is valid, they will issue a reimbursement.
