Golf: OFSAA CHAMPIONS

2017 will be remembered as the year for many FIRSTS in the history of the St. Theresa of Lisieux golf program.

  • first year when CUTS had to be made at a girls golf team TRYOUT due to the overwhelming amount of interest.
  • first year that we've won medals at the YRAA Girls Golf championship with (gr 9) Adele Chun winning GOLD and (gr 9) Cynthia Ni winning BRONZE.
  • first year that STL has won the YRAA Girls Golf Team Championship GOLD medals (by 97 strokes over the 2nd place team).
  • first year that STL has sent 3 golfers to OFSAA.

STL has a lot to be proud of in the accomplishments of their Varsity Girls Golf Team in 2017. This is just the beginning as the Lady Lions will be a force in the YRAA golf community for the next 2 - 3 years. They will continue to adorn our gymnasium with their championship banners!

Your Varsity Girls Golf team members are: Sungeun Ahn, Adele Chun, Kaitlyn Malapitan, Cynthia Ni, and Calista Zeng. The team is supported by their coaching staff: Mrs. Hayhoe, Mr. Nicholls, Mr. Villeneuve, and Mr. Wong.

Congratulations Lady Lions!

Tennis: YRAA Champions

The STL Tennis team is to be congratulated for their brilliant showing for the 2017 season.

On September 26th, 2017 the Junior and Senior tennis team participated in the Regional YRAA Tennis Tournament. Despite having to suffer through a record heat wave, the Lions persevered and rallied their way to the top. Out of the seven teams, four teams were able to advance to the YRAA Championships which took place on September 29th, 2017, showcasing their athleticism and sportsmanship.

Thanks to the combined effort of all players, STL was successful in securing its first ever team pennant and trophy for Tennis. A special congratulations to the following teams for bringing home gold medals in their respective divisions: Anna Mucea in the Junior Girls Singles Division, Lauren Kim & Pe'er Krut in the Junior Girls Doubles Division, and Matthew Warrick & Emily Bunch in the Senior Mixed Doubles Division.

We look forward to having a strong showing at the OFSAA Tennis Championships in June 2018.

Coaches Ms. Ah-Chin, Ms. Grice, and Mr. Puopolo are all very proud. The coaches would also like to thank the senior players that have shown their commitment over the years, as they have truly created a competitive program at STL. Go Lions!

Junior Boys Rugby Sevens: YRAA Champions

Although it was not quite Halloween, you may have noticed a few scary creatures walking the STL halls in late October. Some looked pale, clammy and frail, while others looked bruised, bloodied and and slightly crippled. These young men were also highly identifiable by the shiny gold medals hanging proudly from their necks, and all of them so happened to be on our Jr. Boys Rugby Team. Our team consists of the following players: Luke Avveduto, Matthew Benazzi. Colvin Bunker. Mark Colavita, Nickolas Costa, Andrew Dawson, Adrian DeGasperis, Kyle Joe, Jason Kim, Gabe Mihele, Nic Nikolic, David Pilla, Spencer Riberio, Sam Shearer .

On October 25th, the boys took on the very best from around the province at the Rugby Ontario Championship after claiming a second straight YRAA Rugby Sevens title the week prior. After dominating Toronto champions from Victoria Park in their first game - winning 21 to 7 despite many of the boys fighting the flu - the team went on to finish the round robin a perfect 3 and 0 with wins over Durham’s champs Uxbridge Secondary School and Peel’s champs Applewood High.

The semi-finals would set up a rematch of the YRAA finals between the Lions and Father Bressani with another familiar result for STL with a clinical 25 to 7 win and thus set the table for another match with arguably the most successful high school rugby program in Ontario and number 1 seed from Uxbridge. Despite all the adversity, illness, cold and injuries, the Lions took a commanding lead into halftime and never looked back winning 24-12. By doing so, they shocked the entire rugby community and have become the first rugby team in STL history to win a provincial title. The coaching staff could not be more proud of this group on and off the pitch.

On behalf of the players, the coaching staff would like to extend a huge thank you to Ms. Faraone and our administration, including our secretarial staff and of course our entire teaching staff, for their support and patience in making this opportunity possible for these young men over the course of the intense five week season. It is for this reason that at STL we are ALL Champions and share in this remarkable achievement.

Senior Boys Soccer: YRAA Champions

After the Senior Boys Soccer Team lost the 1st game of the season 3-0, the lions knew that if they were going to have a successful season, they had to revamp their style of play, their formation and their game as a whole. Training sessions would have to be modified to compliment the player personnel. What followed were confused lions at training sessions and whispers during team huddles. In the end, the change in their game led to going undefeated the rest of the season. They came back from being down in both the quarter and semi-finals to play in the championship game.

In the finals, the lions stuck to the game plan and at half the score was tied 0-0. In the second half, St. Brother Andre left themselves exposed and Jonathan Samson spotted it right away. As left fullback, he began making runs up the field. Finally, on his 3rd run on a corner kick rebound, he was left unmarked and headed the goal that would send the boys to OFSAA and make them The Tier 1 Boys YRAA soccer champions for the second year in a row. Coach Savo and Coach Cardone want to personally thank all players for their hard work dedication, focus and iron will to win. The boys had no quit in them. They joined arms and did this as a unit, as a team! The coaches would also like to thank all the fans, the teachers and administration for braving the cold in that final game. Congratulations gentlemen! The boys will be travelling to Thunder Bay in June to compete in OFSAA. Good luck!

Jr. Boys Tier 2 Volleyball: YRAA Champions

The 2017 Junior Boys Volleyball season was one for the ages! Comprised of Grade 10 seasoned veterans and some new Grade 9 blood, the team was balanced and poised for greatness. The Boys rallied through some tough matches through the regular season to emerge undefeated, with a perfect 12-0 record!

Prior to the playoffs, the Junior Boys ventured to Richmond Hill High School for their annual Volleyball Invitational Tournament. Battling hard all day, the Boys roared their way to victory and finished the day with shiny Gold Medals dangling from their necks.

As the playoffs loomed, the Boys stayed focused, disciplined and practiced hard. The playoff day at Markville Secondary School was a harrowing experience. After losing handily to the host team in the round robin, the Boys found themselves in the Finals pitted against their nemesis, Markville. In dramatic fashion, the Boys systematically dismantled a stunned Markville team and rolled over them in two convincing straight sets to capture the Junior Boys Tier 2 Volleyball Championship banner!

Coaches Veitch and Villeneuve are very proud of the determination and persistence displayed by this group of young men. Congratulations Boys! You deserve every accolade.

Regular Season

Junior Girls 7's Rugby Team

The Junior Girls 7’s Rugby Team had a fantastic season. Their collective skill, dedication, and positive attitude made for a very memorable and successful season. They won many of their games and played hard in ALL of them--even going undefeated on the last day of the four day tournament. They were a wonderful team to work with and be with both on and off the field. Well done girls!

Junior Boys’ Soccer 2017

After 3 days of try-outs that had to be split into groups because of the large number of students who came out for the team, 19 talented young men were chosen to represent the STL Junior Boys’ Soccer team. They quickly identified themselves as a team that would challenge all of their opponents. In their pre-season tournament, the Junior Lions went undefeated and beat the host team, Michael Power 5-0 in the final game to be crowned tournament champions!

Throughout the season, this team continued to show their depth both offensively and defensively, finishing with a record of 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1tie. They earned first place in their division by accumulating an impressive 25 goals while only conceding 3.

Advancing to the quarter-finals, the team came out slow, but managed to find their legs in the second half to record a convincing 6-0 win over St. Jean de Brebeuf. In semi-finals, facing a stronger St. Joan of Arc team, the Lions posted a 3-0 win and advanced to the YRAA finals. Here, they would face Emily Carr High School. In the opening minutes of the match, it became evident that this would be the strongest opponents the team would face all season. Unfortunately, Emily Carr won the match 3:2 at the end of extra time and our players received silver medals.

However in the opinion of the coaches, this outcome is not as important as the character that these boys revealed during the game. Their tenacious approach and the 'do whatever it takes' attitude saw them dominate the game over the team with the best record in the region. There were no early jitters, no fear; there was just courage. STL hit the ground running from the first whistle and did everything not to let up until the very last one. They battled for every inch of the pitch with an immense amount of heart, desire, determination, grit and respect for the game. They left everything they had on the field, but still the outcome was not in their favour.

Trophy or not, this group of young men etched themselves in the STL Futbol history and in memories of everyone who witnessed this exciting game!

Thank you Juniors for playing futbol the way it is meant to be played. It was poetry in motion and you made your coaches very proud!
