The Business Department is proud to share that 7 of our 12 business students who participated in the Waterloo Financial Literacy Competition received a Gold/Honour Roll recognition and are able to claim a prize of $75 each. Albert Li, a grade 12 student, made the Honour Roll placing in the top 5 of all grade 12 students competing. In addition to this, STL earned a place on the School Honour Roll, which recognizes the top 3 schools that will receive a $500.00 cash prize to put towards classroom enhancements.

The business department is proud to announce the NEW Business Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) program offered at STL. The program offers students in grade 11 and 12 the opportunity to focus on a future career in business while working to obtain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Business SHSM students have the opportunity to gain essential job skills within the business field both at school and through their co-op placements. Students also participate and earn beneficial industry certification and training, including Standard First Aid and CPR. Access to reach-ahead experiences at post-secondary institutions and participation in sector-specific learning through conferences and workshops are also a valuable component of the SHSM program. Upon completion of the program, Business SHSM students receive a red seal on their diploma and are eligible to apply for various SHSM scholarships.
Currently, there are thirty-seven students in grades 11 and 12 enrolled in the program and twenty-six students in the pre-SHSM program. For more information, feel free to join the Business SHSM classroom using code s3545ne.s
We are pleased to announce our new website that contains information on courses, programs and much more.
It is hard to believe that half a school year has passed and that although we have once again opened our doors to students after a lockdown, many have chosen to learn remotely. This remote system of learning comes with both advantages and disadvantages. One clear disadvantage is that providing online or electronic resources is quite expensive. The yearly cost of ebooks greatly surpasses the cost of print materials.
The Library Learning Commons has continued to help students access ebooks required for classes. In December, the Board purchased the start-up package for Sora/Overdrive which provides hundreds of free ebooks for elementary and secondary students to borrow. For example, secondary students can borrow young adult literature, fiction including classic literature, non-fiction, and much more. We are able to purchase titles that teachers will use in their classrooms and titles that students would like to read for pleasure. Sora can be accessed through the school’s library page of the website under the YCDSB databases or through D2L/Brightspace.
The library has also purchased Teen Book Cloud, another resource that students can use to access fiction and nonfiction ebooks. Teen Book Cloud, along with SORA, allows students the possibility of choosing a novel or a nonfiction book to read for pleasure. One of many excellent ways for students to relax and calm their minds is by reading. Through books students can travel to different locations for a number of experiences, no Covid-19 restrictions or precautions necessary. The Library Learning Commons continues to support staff and students wherever possible.
Keep reading STL and stay safe.
LA RENTRÉE SCOLAIRE 2021:
Quadmesters one and two ended with many student accomplishments. We are currently immersed in quadmester 3, and want to take the opportunity to warmly welcome a new member to the Department of Modern Languages, Ms. Maria Santella. Her background and experience in French studies is extensive and her efforts in this new Virtual Learning Environment is to be commended.
Ms. Maria Santella
O.E.C.T.A. PRIX JEUNES ÉCRIVAINES ET ÉCRIVAINS 2021:
Over the last few quadmesters, STL French students have been hard at work producing literary works of art in Poetry, Short Story, Non-fiction and Play. Just recently, these aspiring authors submitted their creative writing pieces for the French edition of the Young Authors Awards. Members of the Department of Modern Languages reviewed the overwhelming number of junior and senior entries and determined eight School Level winners, whose pieces will advance to the Board Level of Competition.
Felicitation to all students for submitting their exhilarating pieces. Their strong efforts have been duly noted.
We thank all members of the Department of Modern Languages— M. Puopolo, Mme Santella, and Mme Sabatini for encouraging their students to submit pieces for the 2021 Prix.
