Athletic

Hey STL

Here’s a preview of some of Athletic Council’s events that have already happened, and what is coming in the near future, here at STL! The 2018/19 sports season started out strong with a few YRAA and OFSAA wins in the fall season. As the winter season comes to a close, we hope to continue that winning streak with the Varsity Boys' Hockey team competing for an OFSAA win. These are just a few successes STL has had this year, in just three short months. Imagine what is to come in the future. Not only does Athletic Council bring in sports teams, but on November 30th, AC brought back their annual Teacher vs. Student Basketball Buy-In. On this day students got the opportunity to watch some of our teachers play an intense game of basketball against some of our best senior student athletes at STL. Stay tuned for Athletic Council's health awareness week coming up in March. We are so excited for all the events that are still to come, and hope you are too. Come support us at our events, and join the athletes of STL!

Chaplaincy

At the end of December, Chaplaincy council hosted their annual Advent Liturgy mass. This year, the theme of the Advent liturgy was “Awaiting the King.” Celebrating Advent together as a school community gave students the opportunity to take a step back and truly prepare their hearts and minds to receive Jesus this Christmas. Advent is a time of hope, hope that people's lives will be enriched with the presence of Jesus. Each of the candles on the Advent wreath represents different virtues: virtues of hope, love, joy, and peace.

Intramural

As a council of sports-loving, friendly, and enthusiastic leaders, we continued to dedicate ourselves to promoting inclusivity within the STL community through sports. As November ended, we continued on our journey to continuously support our school and planned out our next events for the upcoming months. Thanks to all our wonderful members, advisors, and student participation, we were able to successfully run our annual Basketball Drop-In. We were so glad to see participation not only from our student-athletes, but also from a variety of students who share a passion for basketball.

After the break, we began preparation for the Soccer Drop-In, which will be hosted and run during the week of February 18th, after Family Day. We are expecting a wonderful turn-out and excellent student participation.

Finally, we will be concluding February with our biggest event of the year, Intramural Week. During this week, we will be hosting games and events throughout the entire week of February 25th, along with a Sports Equipment Drive. The events will consist of Sports Trivia, Kahoots, and a game in the main hall of our school, including an exciting game of Dodgeball after school in the gym on Wednesday, February 27th for all grades. The Sports Equipment Drive will be held on the morning of every day that week, where students can bring gently used sports equipment, jerseys, and balls.

Intramural Council would like to thank our teacher advisors as well as the STL community for participating in these memorable experiences that resulted in the student body having fun while participating in physical activity!!!

Social Justice

Operation St. Nick:

In December, Social Justice Council ran their most successful event thus far. During the council’s annual food and clothing drive “Operation St. Nick”, also known as OSN, the STL community was able to raise 18,107 items, exceeding the council’s goal of 18,000 donations. From Monday, December 17 to Friday, December, 21, copious STL students volunteered their time for their community by counting, sorting, and packing items to be sent to various homeless shelters in the Greater Toronto Area, specifically, Scott Mission and Good Shepherd. Each day was replete with exhausting tasks for the council and its volunteers, but the compassion displayed by the student body through an abundance of donations made the effort worthwhile. Additionally, a points system was implemented to encourage friendly competition between junior and senior homeroom classes. The two classes with the most points in each division, Mr. Saggese’s and Mr. Kirejczyk’s classes, were awarded a homeroom breakfast for their endless support to Operation St. Nick. To congratulate the STL community for reaching the initial goal set by Social Justice Council, a red and green shirt day was also awarded the following week.

Spirit

This past December, Spirit Council hosted the annual Christmas Spirit Week. The week was filled with lunch activities, door decorating, Christmas Idol, festive music, and amazing decorations around the school. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, during all 3 lunches, we held Mad Gabs, Singalong and Heads Up. These 3 lunch activities were met with a lot of participation and positivity! On Thursday, hundreds of kids came wearing their best or ugliest Christmas sweaters, and with the festive cheer in the air, you could tell no one could wait for the break to come. On Friday, Spirit Council had Christmas movies playing in the cafeteria. Christmas Idol was another successful event this year. Many classes submitted their rough drafts but only 3 finalists were chosen: Thank U Next, It’s a Party in Santa’s Sleigh and the Friends Theme Song. All around the school doors were also decorated. Many doors were decorated beautifully; however, the teachers of the top 4 classes were Mr. Magnifico, Ms. Elliot, Ms. Ventrella, and Mr. Morrison. In conclusion, Christmas Spirit Week went extremely well with participation and enthusiasm and was generally well received. We had a great time bringing the Christmas cheer and STL spirit to our students!

Student Council

In the past few months, Student Council has been busy with two main events: Christmas Candy Grams and Santa’s Workshop. Both of them were definitely successful in spreading Christmas joy and building a sense of community within STL.

Christmas Candy Grams:

In December, Student Council held their annual Christmas Candy Grams event in collaboration with Environmental Council. Students were able to order candy canes with custom messages for their fellow peers and/or teachers. This was a sweet way for them to show appreciation for their friends during this wonderful time of giving. Later on in the month, council members delivered these candy grams to all of the homeroom classes. The event definitely allowed students in all grades to spread some holiday cheer and celebrate the Christmas season. Over 400 Candy Canes were sold and the students were delighted to see Stuco members deliver boxes full of the delicious treats to the homeroom classes all across STL! To promote inclusivity, each and every student also received a candy cane sent to them from Santa. We would like to thank all of those who participated in this event and we hope to see even more students show their Christmas spirit for next year's Christmas Candy Grams!

Santa's Workshop:

On December 20th, students across STL were given the chance to meet Santa Claus during all three lunches! A photobooth was set up in the Main Hall, where students were able to gather with their friends and take pictures with Stuco’s very own Santa Claus. With festive props and a snowy backdrop, Student Council yet again strengthened the spirit of Christmas at STL. Thank you to all of the students who participated in taking pictures, as well as to our Santas: Armaan Mahajan, Eric Deaconu, and Husayn Panju.
