Clubs and Committees

E.S.P. & S.O.S.

The E.S.P./S.O.S. Committee continues to focus on healthy lifestyle choices. With Officer Rob, our school resource officer, our E.S.P./S.O.S. students gave a Healthy Choices presentation to all grade 9 students. This presentation focused on positive and negative peer pressure and stress management. They encouraged the grade 9 students to get involved in athletics, clubs and committees in order to stay positive. Grade 9 students were also warned of the dangers of drugs and other risky behaviours. We will always encourage students to live healthy lives. In December we held our annual Merry Mocktail event. Our mocktails consisted of strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas. The money raised, $127.00, was donated to Yellow Brick House. Another event we held in December was our LCBO bag event. All classes were given an LCBO bag to decorate with images and messages that deal with the dangers of impaired driving. These bags were then brought back to the LCBO to use for their customers. The images below show some samples of what the students created. In January, we hosted St. John Ambulance's therapy dogs. Students streamed through the library for a little stress release before their culminating performance tasks and exams. In February, we will be organizing a mental health panel discussion for the students in grades 10 and 12.

DECA

From February 7 to 9, the STL DECA chapter descended upon the Toronto Sheraton Centre to compete at the 40th annual DECA Provincials competition. After months of dedicated preparation and practice, our chapter has successfully shattered all previous records with 15 chapter members qualifying for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), and 20 members winning some sort of award in their category. ICDC, the international level of DECA competition, is being held this year in sunny Orlando, Florida. These students will get the exciting opportunity to train, compete, and network with some of the top business and entrepreneurship emerging leaders in America, and from around the world. Special congratulations go to Angelina Zhang, Mary Zhuang, Aishwaria Maxwell, Mikail Bardai, Renee Wu, Sherry Yang, Stefania Coroneos, Mikaela Dai, Conrad Koehl, Jinal Rajawat, Jake Birkness, Alex Bancea, Jordyn Tull, Rachel Shen, and Justin Au-Yeung, for qualifying for ICDC, and to Rochelle Raveendran, Alexandra Rombos, Paula Varela and Katarina Zorcic, for finishing top 20 in their categories. The advisors and the executive team could not be more proud of everyone, and wish those heading to Orlando all the best!

MODEL UN

Since the beginning of September, STL’s Model UN chapter has been working hard to put together a group like no other. With over 50 students from all grades, this year's chapter is the largest and most diverse Model UN has ever seen. Under the leadership of this year's Executive team, and our teacher advisor Mr. Saggese, the chapter set out to represent STL at conferences all over the GTA. At weekly meetings, the chapter worked hard to improve skills in debating. Students also learned how to think critically and create innovative solutions to relevant issues the global community faces today. In December, the chapter attended its first conference at Cedarbrae Collegiate where STL was able to win the most awards of any school in attendance. A special congratulations goes out to: Rachel Nedialkov, Justin Stanislaus, Darya Sadeghi, Pe’er Krut and Elnaz Delavari for winning awards in their respective committees. After the success of the chapter's first conference, STL MUN attended the University of Toronto’s Model United Nations Conference where delegates participated in four days of debate with some of the countries' and world’s brightest students. The chapter had a great time learning, meeting new people and exploring Toronto with special trips to the Ice Festival and Ripley’s Aquarium. Three delegates were able to win awards in their respective committees and two of our delegates were invited to Harvard’s annual secondary Model UN conference. What an honour! A special congratulations goes out to award winners: Stanley Tang, Dennis Joo and Pe’er Krut. Thank you to Mr. Saggese and Ms. De Lucia as well as the executive team for a fun-filled and motivating weekend full of discussion, debate and above all, diplomacy.

ROBOTICS

On Saturday, February 9, 2019, four STL Robotics teams travelled to St. Michael's College, University of Toronto, to compete in the VEX Robotics Qualifying tournament. After many late nights at school and countless hours of preparation, the teams finally got to show off their finished robots. Two teams were primarily grade 9 students and the other two teams were primarily grade 11 students. All teams competed hard and had successful days at the tournament. After the round robin, two teams moved on to the elimination rounds - Team 82885X and Team 82885G.

Team 82885X, comprised entirely of grade 9 students, pulled off the upset of the day beating the second ranked team in the round of 16. The two STL teams faced off in the quarter finals, with team 82885G coming out on top after a hard fought match. Team 82885G made it all the way to the tournament finals before losing to the top ranked team. They won the Innovate Award for the team with the most innovative design feature on their robot. With their impressive showing, 82885G qualified for provincials in St. Catharines.

The advisors are extremely proud of all teams. They represented their school with enthusiasm, respect, and sportsmanship - the future is bright for STL Robotics!
