St. Jean de Brebeuf is one of only two schools offering this program! This SHSM sector enables students to gain skills, experience, and certifications related to the manufacturing sector. Graduates with an SHSM in Manufacturing will not only finish with an enhanced resume of experiences but they will also be provided with a strong understanding of the many aspects of the manufacturing sector. A small sample of careers in this field includes: welder, tool maker, design technologist, mechanical engineering technologist, plumber, construction, machine operator, electrician, foundry worker, and more.

Earn a red seal on your OSSD that is highly-recognized by many Universities, Colleges, Apprenticeships, and employers

Students are required to gain specific credits, earn certifications, and attend activities in order to earn the SHSM red seal on their OSSD.
Combination of Grade 11 and 12 credits

4 manufacturing major credits: These can be a combination of grade 11 and 12 courses (may include up to 3 cooperative education credits in addition to the required co-op credits)
3 other required credits: Any ONE Gr.11 or Gr.12 English credit, any ONE Gr.11 or Gr.12 Math credit, any ONE Gr, 11 or Gr.12 Science credit (not required of the workplace pathway), ONE additional Gr.12 English credit (required for workplace pathway ONLY)
Cooperative Education: Two Co-op credits (Additional Co-op credits may count towards ONE major credit)

Manufacturing SHSM students are required to complete certifications. These are offered to students at no cost and are valuable to future employers. By gaining these certifications, students are able to add to their resumes and learn important skills for their future pathways.
Compulsory Certifications (3):
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C - includes automated external defibrillation (AED)
Standard First Aid
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Elective Certifications (3):
These will be organized by the school and may vary from year to year. Students must complete two elective certifications. The following are examples of possible elective certifications available to students:
Customer Service
Infection Control
Scaffold Safety
Portfolio Development
Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) - flat
Project Management
Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM)
Basic Electrical Safety

Manufacturing SHSM students will take part in a career exploration opportunity for no cost as part of the program. Opportunities like these will help students make more informed choices about potential career pathways and gain real-world experience in a sector that interests them. A career exploration opportunity may include:
one-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at a placement in the manufacturing sector (an example of job twinning)
a day-long observation of a skilled tradesperson in the manufacturing sector (an example of job shadowing)
a one- or two-week work experience with a member of an industry association or a professional in the sector (an example of work experience)
participation in a local, provincial, or national Skills Canada competition
a tour of a range of manufacturing enterprises
attendance at a manufacturing trade show, conference, or job fair
attendance at demonstrations and hands-on activities presented by equipment vendors

Manufacturing SHSM students are provided with reach ahead experiences at no cost that will allow them to take their next steps in their chosen pathway. Experiences may include:
Apprenticeship: visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the sector
College: interviewing a college student enrolled in a sector-specific program
University: observing a university class in a sector-related program
Workplace: interviewing an employee in the sector
Students will gain new skills in either: Innovation, Creativity, & Entrepreneurship (ICE), Coding, or Math Literacy with a community partner. All of these areas will help students prepare for their future pathways related to Manufacturing SHSM.

Manufacturing SHSM students are automatically eligible to enroll in dual high school/college credit courses. This means that students can enroll in courses at a variety of local college campuses. This is beneficial because:
Students can gain a grade 12 course that qualifys as a business major credit for the SHSM requirement
Dual Credit is considered a Reach Ahead activity for the SHSM requirement
Students gain a credit for thier high school diploma AND a post-secondary credit
They are taking part in a college course FOR FREE
Students have access to all campus resources for the entire semester
