Graduates with an SHSM in Business will not only finish with an enhanced resume of experiences but they will also be prepared for careers or post-secondary studies in the financial, retail or management industries. The Business sector, the central pillar of Canada’s economy, is bursting with opportunities for over one third of Canada’s workforce already employed in this area. Demand for employees in this sector will be great for years to come due to the effects of globalization and new technology.

Students are required to gain specific credits, earn certifications, and attend activities in order to earn the SHSM red seal on their OSSD.
Combination of Grade 11 and 12 credits

Reach Ahead Experience
Sector Partnered Experience
4 business major credits: These can be a combination of grade 11 and 12 courses
3 other required credits: Any ONE Gr.12 English credit (1 Gr.11 English credit is required for the workplace pathway), any ONE Gr.11 Math credit, any ONE Gr.12 Math credit (not required of the workplace pathway)
Cooperative Education: Two Co-op credits (Additional Co-op credits may count towards ONE major credit)
Business SHSM students are required to complete certifications. These are offered to students at no cost and are valuable to future employers. By gaining these certifications, students are able to add to their resumes and learn important skills for their future pathways.
Compulsory Certifications (4):
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C - includes automated external defibrillation (AED)
Customer Service
Standard First Aid
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Elective Certifications (2):
These will be organized by the school and may vary from year to year. Students must complete two elective certifications. The following are examples of possible elective certifications available to students:
Advanced Training in a Technology
Business Etiquette
Effective Networking
Leadership Skills
Public Speaking

Business SHSM students will take part in a career exploration opportunity for no cost as part of the program. Opportunities like these will help students make more informed choices about potential career pathways and gain real-world experience in a sector that interests them. A career exploration opportunity may include:
One-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at a placement in the business sector (an example of job twinning)
A day-long observation of a business person (an example of job shadowing)
A one- or two-week work experience with a member of a business association or a professional in the sector (an example of work experience)
Attendance at a retail show (e.g., a home show or craft show), conference, or workshop focusing on the business sector
Participation in a local, provincial, or national contest or competition with a focus on business (e.g., a business plan competition or stock market competition)
Working with a mentor within the business community (e.g., to provide assistance in creating a business plan)
A tour of the local chamber of commerce

The requirement will allow students to explore the next steps in their pathway. The following are examples of experiences that may be offered:
Apprenticeship: visiting an approved apprenticeship delivery agent in the sector
College: interviewing a college student enrolled in a sector-specific program
University: observing a university class in a sector-related program
Workplace: interviewing an employee in the sector
Students will gain new skills in either: Innovation, Creativity, & Entrepreneurship (ICE), Coding, or Math Literacy with a community partner. All of these areas will help students prepare for their future pathways related to Business SHSM.

Business SHSM Students will be able to work with business professionals and companies in the community.
Business SHSM students are automatically eligible to enroll in dual high school/college credit courses. This means that students can enroll in courses at a variety of local college campuses. This is beneficial because:
Students can gain a grade 12 course that qualifies as a business major credit for the SHSM requirement
Dual Credit is considered a Reach Ahead activity for the SHSM requirement
Students gain a credit for their high school diploma AND a post-secondary credit
They are taking part in a college course FOR FREE
Students have access to all campus resources for the entire semester
