Welcome to all things SHSM at St. Jean-de-Brébeuf CHS!
What exactly is SHSM?
A Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements to graduate from secondary school. It also assists in their transition after graduation to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.
Taking part in a Specialist High Skills Major allows students to gain valuable skills and experience hands-on learning in their area of interest. Students will also be more prepared for the pathway of their choosing: training, college, university or the workplace. SHSM students have the ability to earn industry certifications and attend educational trips at NO COST! SHSM allows students to identify, explore and refine their career goals, while participating in beneficial and unique experiences.
SHSM students receive a red seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma at graduation, acknowledging their participation in the SHSM program. They also have access to scholarships, bursaries, and awards at many major Canadian universities and colleges: Scholarship Opportunities
SHSM students are able to enroll in Dual Credit courses, gaining a high school and college credit at NO COST. See each program's page above for more information.
SHSM takes place throughout a student's grade 11 & 12 years. Declare interest and sign up now: SIGN UP PAGE
Each stream of SHSM has different requirements, visit each program's page to learn more.
All SHSM programs require students to participate in Co-op. Co-op (Cooperative Education), can be completed in a student's grade 11 year, grade 12 year, or during the summer between grade 11 and 12. Co-op is a form of experiential learning for which credits are earned that combines classroom theory and learning experiences at a placement. Students are able to enroll in 2-credit (attend period 1 & 2 and go to placement in the afternoon) or 4-credit co-op (attend placement the entire day). Through co-op, students gain real-world experience, expand their network, and gain knowledge about their future career path all while gaining credits toward their OSSD.
