UPDATE as of September 2024: The Ontario provincial government has introduced a mandatory technological education credit for high school students in Grade 9/10 to prepare them for future careers in STEM and the skilled trades. This initiative emphasizes hands-on learning experiences and technical skills. Students will have the opportunity to explore new areas of interest, discover their passions, and graduate with a competitive advantage in the job market. With a diverse range of courses available, students can choose from subjects such as Communications Technology, Technological Design, and Transportation Technology (noted below in BLUE within the course description).
This exploratory course introduces multilingual learners (MLLs) to concepts and skills related to technological design, focusing on developing solutions to design challenges and creating models or prototypes of those solutions. Students will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field, while building their English language skills and developing confidence in using technical vocabulary.
The course integrates Catholic social teachings, encouraging students to become critical and innovative problem-solvers who thoughtfully consider the use of human and physical resources. Through hands-on activities and visual aids, students will gain an understanding of the implications of technology and computers, with a focus on collaborative learning and communication. Emphasis will be placed on respecting the dignity of the individual, protecting the environment, and making ethical and moral decisions in the use of the world’s resources.
This adapted course provides additional support for MLLs through scaffolding, language-focused instruction, and opportunities for self-expression in both English and their first language, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all learners.
