Liturgical life at SBA is central to our spiritual identity. Throughout the school year, we gather as a community for School Masses to mark key moments such as the Opening Mass, Advent, Lent and the Year-End Mass. These celebrations provide students with opportunities to come together in thanksgiving, reflection, and unity. In addition, we honour the Church calendar through Feast Day Liturgies and other special celebrations, including Ash Wednesday. First Friday Masses, held in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, are offered as a regular opportunity for prayer and reflection. Students are encouraged to take active roles in these liturgies by proclaiming Scripture, leading prayer, or participating in the music ministry, which makes the celebration of our faith truly student-centered and vibrant.
Prayer grounds everything we do at SBA. Each day begins with Daily Morning Prayers, which offer students and staff a moment of peace and reflection before the day begins. These prayers are led by students, and reflect both the liturgical season and the daily needs of our community. Our Chaplaincy Team Members are available to visit classrooms throughout the year in an effort to provide students with moments of reflection and encouragement in the midst of their academic lives. Eucharistic Adoration is offered throughout the year as a sacred time of stillness in the presence of Christ—inviting students into deeper spiritual connection and inner peace. Special prayer services throughout the Liturgical Year, and Stations of the Cross during Lent provide a wide range of spiritual experiences that reflect the diversity and depth of our Catholic tradition.
The sacraments are central to our Catholic faith and play a vital role in the spiritual journey of each student. They are tangible signs of God's grace and love, helping us to grow in holiness and deepen our relationship with Christ. At St. Brother André, we are committed to providing students with meaningful and accessible opportunities to encounter the sacraments within the school community. In addition to Eucharistic celebrations, students are invited to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the sacred seasons of Advent and Lent. These penitential times invite reflection, renewal, and preparation for Christmas and Easter. Local parish priests are welcomed into the school to celebrate this sacrament, offering a supportive, compassionate space for students to confess their sins, seek healing, and experience the mercy of God. For many students, this becomes a powerful encounter with God's unconditional love and a reminder of the importance of forgiveness in their lives.
At SBA, students are not just participants in worship - they are leaders. Through the Chaplaincy Team and Faith Development Council, students help plan and lead prayer services, take on liturgical roles, and support spiritual initiatives across the school. This student-led model fosters ownership of faith and builds leadership skills rooted in service, compassion, and witness. We celebrate spiritual expression and creativity through faith-based art projects, seasonal prayer boards, and reflection displays that bring the liturgical seasons to life within our school hallways. Throughout the year, we offer special blessings that recognize the unique gifts and contributions of different student groups. Our growing school music ministry also plays a vital role in our liturgical life, with student musicians and singers leading worship during Masses, prayer services, and retreat gatherings, ultimately deepening the sense of community and reverence through music. Prayer services for peace, justice, mental health, and other relevant intentions help students connect faith with real-world challenges. All of these experiences remind our school community that worship is not a passive act, but an ongoing, lived expression of our shared Catholic faith.
At St. Brother André Catholic High School, serving others is a meaningful way we live out our Catholic faith. Our school community is actively involved in supporting those in need, both within our local area and beyond. Students participate in a wide range of service initiatives such as food drives, sandwich-making projects for City Street Outreach, and collections for local shelters and international missions. We also maintain a special connection with our neighbours at Amica Swan Lake Retirement Residence, where students visit to share conversation, prayer, music, and companionship with the residents. These experiences teach students the importance of compassion, solidarity, and generosity, while helping them grow in empathy and leadership. Through service, we deepen our commitment to social justice and learn to see Christ in each person we encounter.
