Purpose: Experience an ancient method of creating surface decoration for bisqued clay.
While smoke and glaze are both techniques used to alter clay's surface look, they both result in a different outcome. Glazes can be used to create a shiny, colored surface depending on what color of glaze you use. On the other hand, smoke results in a matte look with a high concentration of greys, blacks, and browns with little color variance. For a better result, I would have used smaller leaves to cover the space instead of larger ones leaving larger patches of white. Waxing the forms after firing was a way of making the form shine and become more “vibrant” or less boring. It made the colors pop and left less of a matte, plain look on the forms.
