I am most proud of the narrative slab mug project that I made as it was one of my best pieces. Specifically, I like the detail and final finish of many of the aspects such as the Sugarloaf logo or the ski binding on the handle. A close runner-up would be the coil pot but I enjoyed the clay forming of the slab mug more even though I like the sgraffito and theme I did on my coil pot. My slab mug reflects a good idea of what the majority of my work looked like throughout the semester as I put a lot of time and effort into many of my projects.
The most informative project in the semester was the test tiles. Although it may have been one of the simplest, it taught us nearly all of the basic tasks we would need to perform throughout the semester. For example, we learned how to roll clay, measure and cut clay, texture the clay, and most importantly glaze the clay while creating different colors by layering. This impacted the rest of my semester because it allowed me to understand the steps of each of my ceramic pieces better.
I think for the semester I met the majority of my goals. A large goal was to successfully make a variety of pieces while having many be inspired by the outdoors or some of my favorite hobbies. I was able to accomplish this as many of the personal pieces I made were inspired by the outdoors, such as my mug which was inspired by skiing, my slab box which was inspired by camping, and finally, my coil pot which was inspired by lobstering and the ocean. The only goal I didn’t reach was throwing clay on a wheel.
First Thoughts/Goals for the semester
Something that inspires me - the outdoors
What would I like to make - a lot of different things, hopefully, throw clay on a wheel
