In second grade, reading and writing are taught using the workshop model. Each lesson begins with a minilesson where students are taught a skill or strategy they can use when reading or writing independently. As they work independently, teachers meet with small groups to provide more targeted instruction or confer with individual students based on their needs.
The content of minilessons is based on both the student's needs and the scope and sequence of The Teachers College Reading and Writing Programs.
