Purpose
To learn about Pop Art and Artists associated with the art movement;
To create your own Pop Art inspired by Andy Warhol;
To work individually to follow directions and problem solve;
To use creative problem solving skills to learn new tools and techniques in Photoshop.
Roy Lichtenstein’s Hopeless is 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. This piece is Pop Art because Lichtenstein took the style of comic books, which were popular back then, and turned it into fine art. The bold colors, thick black outlines, and patterns are all characteristics of comics. I like this piece because it turns something simple, like a sad moment in a comic, into a dramatic and visually exciting artwork. I find the way Lichtenstein mixes popular culture with art is fascinating.
The Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol is 6'10" tall and 4'10" wide. This artwork is Pop Art because it takes a famous individual, Marilyn Monroe, and has her face repeated in a way that shows lots of production. Warhol used bright, unnatural colors to make the piece feel like a commercial painting. I chose this artwork because Warhol uses repetition and color to turn a simple image of a person into something larger than life, making you think about the painting and how it looks.
