To understand how designers create suspense and a particular mood in a poster design.
What can designers do to create suspense and/or a particular mood in a poster design? How did your everyday object become extraordinary?
My object was a camera, a camera could have many different meanings and could be used very differently in this assignment. What I mean when I say it could be used differently in this assignment is there are many things I could have come up with other than the two ideas I chose to work with, so it wasn't super difficult to think of a plot for my movies. A camera is just a regular object that is used to take photos, but if you were to think about it differently, it could have a deeper meaning. That deeper meaning could be, that it was used for many years by someone's loved one, or it could be a gift from someone, so when you take that into proportion you can come up with some cool ideas. To give you a different perspective on suspense, my first movie, “Polaroids In The North Pole” has suspense in it because we are not sure if he is going to get caught in Santa's bag, or if will be caught taking photos of Santa's elves, etc. But the suspense in the movie might not have been voiced loud enough on my poster. For people to make their posters more suspenseful, they can use the skills they have learned from this class to help create a different environment that looks like it has suspense. That is probably something I could have done better on.
How is your object involved in the plot of the movie, how did your decisions transform how people see your object and your Extraordinary Movie Poster?
“Polaroids In The North Pole,” is about a boy, about 9 years old, who is a bit mischievous. He sneaks into Santa's bag while Santa is putting out presents for the young boy's family. He made it to the North Pole without being caught. The night before he snuck into Santa's bag he made a plan on how he was going to sneak into the bag, and he was going to bring the camera his mom got him last christmas to document his whole experience. The young boy snuck into the bag wearing an elf costume from the dollar store he had bought a few days before, he wanted to make sure he would blend in with the other elves while he was there. The camera is the main object of my poster so I had to figure out how to make it stand out. I ended up putting the camera in the middle of my poster, with the boy's hands grabbing onto it, while he took a photo of the two elves standing before him. I wanted people to look at my poster and the first thing they were to see would be the camera so I made it stand out. By looking at my poster you can tell sort of what the movie is about to an extent, but the camera pulled it all together. I did the same with my other poster, making the camera stick out the most and having all the designs around it not as interesting as the camera itself.
