DEIB Peer Resource Advocates FAQs
What is DEIB?
DEIB stands for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging!
What do the DEIB Peer Resource Advocates do and how do they support DEIB?
Our goal is to bring together the Chemistry community and create an atmosphere of belonging by hosting gatherings, like Chemists & Coffee.
We also support our colleagues by bringing DEIB trainings to the department as well as share resources to address discrimination, harassment, mental health challenges, and other issues related to equity, inclusion, and climate.
We are also available as a resource to individuals facing hardships associated with these problems to get the appropriate available assistance. Having a friendly face to lean on can make a world of difference!
Who are the DEIB Peer Resource Advocates?
We are trained volunteers who serve as a resource to all department members.
What types of problems can people come to you for?
We are here to help anyone that is or has experienced discrimination, harassment, mental health challenges, and other issues related to equity, inclusion, and climate.
Do I need to become a DEIB Peer Resource advocate to be welcome at events?
Not at all! Faculty, staff, students and postdocs are all welcome. Our goal is to bring the department together in a welcoming environment.
How can I become a DEIB Peer Resource Advocate?
We always welcome people interested in getting involved to join our planning meetings.
To officially become a DEIB Peer Resource Advocate we require a series of training to be completed. We hold yearly training sessions during the summer to teach new and returning advocates about resources to address discrimination, harassment, mental health challenges, and other issues related to equity, inclusion, and climate. If you're interested in becoming an Advocate, please email linda.zuckerman@yale.edu or marisa.barilla@yale.edu!
How much of a time commitment is it to become a DEIB Peer Resource Advocate?
While voluntary contribution has no time cap, on average most advocates will contribute no more than 5-10 hours per month.
