The book is set in the country of England during World War 2 (WWII) when many children were sent by their parents to live in the countryside to keep them safe. The lion in the title is Aslan. Aslan is a lion and the true ruler of Narnia. He's our hero. The witch is Jadis the White Witch. She is evil and has stolen power in Narnia, not the true queen. Jadis has made Narnia winter all the time but never Christmas. She also likes to turn people she is angry with into stone and keep them as statues in her castle. The wardrobe (a movable closet) is the secret entrance to Narnia from a room in the house. Four children (Lucy, Edmond, Susan, and Peter) go to live in the home of a professor (college teacher) until the war is over. There they discover the secret entrance, make both friends and enemies, and have many adventures.
