First off, I want to acknowledge how difficult this year is for all stakeholders in our community. It is an unprecedented time for teachers, students, and families as we adjust to the “new normal.” When I started teaching 7 years ago, this was not a situation that I ever imagined that my students or I would have to navigate. That being said, my utmost priority this year is the safety of my students and their families. The school is following CDC, state and local guidance for school re-opening. Admittedly, the classroom environment will look very different this year. Some of these changes include hybrid and virtual options for students, new cleaning procedures and social distancing. All students are required to wear a face mask to protect themselves and others at school and in my classroom. Many of the changes to schooling will have a practical impact on teaching and learning. For example, students in my class will participate in alternative digital group-based activities (such as collaborative Google Classroom activities) and teacher demonstrations instead of close-quarters, group-based labs that students may be accustomed to in science class. Whenever possible, students will utilize their personal Chromebook for assignments and note-taking to minimize the exchange of paper and other materials. Students will not be sharing supplies or materials. These changes may present some new challenges for students as they adjust to a mostly online curriculum this year. With all of these changes in place, we are also preparing to adjust plans if school were to close again. In that situation, students would be able to continue receiving instruction and completing their course work from home. It is my intent to provide the best learning experience possible for in-person as well as virtual students. Please know that I am an advocate for you and your Learner. I believe that we will get through this time as a school community and that teaching and learning will continue. If you or your student needs additional accommodations or you have questions about hybrid or virtual learning, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
