((+)) Subject + past simple + objects
(Regular verb) -ed --> She played football yesterday.
(Irregular verb) 2nd column --> You ate an apple yesterday.
((-)) Subject + did + NOT + verb (infinitive! not past!!) --> She didn't play football yesterday.
(didn't) --> You didn't eat an apple yesterday.
((?)) Did + subject + verb (infinitive! not past!!) ? --> Did she play football yesterday?
--> Did you eat an apple yesterday?
• past actions or states which were complete.
What time did she arrive home?
• things in the past which happened frequently.
They played that song six times yesterday!
• past states.
She liked swimming when she was younger.
Sometimes we get confused on when to use the past simple or other past tenses (like the present perfect: I have eaten an apple, already), because the use of these two tenses is different in Catalan (or your own language).
We have to change the spelling of some verbs.
• Verbs ending in -e, remove the -e.
phone + -ed --> phoned
• Verbs ending in consonant + -y, replace -y with -i.
marry + -i --> married
• Verbs ending in -l, double the -l.
travel + -l --> travelled
• One syllable verbs ending with a vowel + consonant, double the final consonant.
stop --> stopped
• Verbs of two or more syllables ending with a vowel + consonant, double the final consonant.
admit --> admitted
Irregular verbs have different past forms.
