IUCN Classification
The Visayan Warty Pig is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature
One man made threat is habitat destruction. Habitat destruction is the process by which a natural habitat of a species becomes incapable of supporting its native species. Habitat destruction causes the species to be displaced, therefore reducing the biodiversity and species abundance. Habitat destruction is the leading cause for species being endangered. Examples of habitat destruction are deforestation, throwing plastics into the ocean, filling in wetlands, dredging rivers, etc. The Visayan Warty Pig's habitat is being deforested, making it critically endangered. Around 92% of its habitat was destroyed during the 70s-80s
Another man made threat is hunting. Hunting is the human practice of seeking, pursuing, capturing or killing animals in the wild. One reason why people hunt are for the animals' products like hide, fur, bone, tusks, horns, etc. Another reason is to get rid of predators or animals that are dangerous to humans. A third reason is for the “thrill” of killing an animal. In the past the natives would hunt the Visayan Warty Pig for its meat as it was a delicacy before. Farmers before would also kill the pigs since the pigs would eat the farmers' crops.
Urban sprawl is the spreading of urban developments on lands that have not yet been developed near an urban center. Urban sprawl is the unrestricted growth of development of undeveloped lands, there is usually little control and management in urban sprawl, it is just build build build wherever you can build. Without urban planning urban sprawl may creep into the wooded or forested areas which results in deforestation and habitat destruction. Urban sprawl also creates pollution, this is because of energy use, traffic congestion. The phenomenon of urban sprawl often leads to the destruction of habitats or destruction of natural untouched land.Britannica (n.d).
As humans continue to marry and procreate to produce offspring(s). The demand for housing, food items, energy, oil, gasoline etc. These will all lead to urban development and possibly urban sprawl. Urban development will require space, space would be made through deforestation. This would further destroy and limit several organism’s habitats in Negros and Panay. The increase in population could also increase the amount of hunters and poachers, some who may not have any regard for the rule of law or care for the critically endangered species in Negros and Panay.
