Write a speech highlighting what you think is the most challenging issue facing the world today, and how the Commonwealth values can be used to solve it.

Consider the heart-wrenching cries of people spanning generations, buildings collapsing, and homes erupting in flames. Such scenes of devastation unfold across the globe, exemplified by the Russia-Ukraine and Gaza-Israel conflicts. I’m sure you are familiar with the Russia-Ukraine war and the Gaza-Israel conflict. The news sites are inundated with coverage, leaving people questioning why these conflicts are happening in the first place. Amidst these crises, we will explore how Commonwealth Values offer a path towards resolution.

When you hear 'human rights,' what do you think of? Discrimination? Freedom? Constitution? They all fit. Human rights serve as a beacon of hope amid the darkness of war and conflict. They testify to our shared humanity and dignity, embodying principles crucial for peace. They represent equality, justice, and freedom—key values for a peaceful society. Human rights play a crucial role in minimising war and conflict by addressing underlying injustices and inequalities. When we tackle the root causes of injustices and inequalities, such as discrimination, poverty, and marginalisation, we promote socio-economic rights. These rights, such as the right to education, healthcare, and employment, have the power to alleviate grievances and reduce the likelihood of conflict. When we champion human rights, we pave the way for a world where everyone's rights are respected, fostering peace and justice.

Strong governance is essential for preventing war and conflict. Effective governance, characterised by transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law, serves as the foundation for preventing conflict and fostering peace. Governments must combat corruption to ensure fair resource distribution and uphold human rights, laying the groundwork for a just and peaceful society. Addressing the root causes of conflict through inclusive policies and development strategies can reduce the likelihood of conflict. Through regional cooperation, diplomacy, and mutual understanding, we can actively contribute to global peace efforts. By working together, we can create a world where peace and harmony prevail.

Multilateralism significantly contributes to world peace, even in times of conflict. Multilateral institutions like the UN play a crucial role in facilitating peaceful negotiations, mediating conflicts, and upholding international law, thereby preventing violence and promoting stability. These institutions establish clear rules of conduct, deter aggression through collective action, and provide crucial humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected areas. By addressing the root causes of conflict, multilateralism lays the foundation for long-term peace and security, benefiting all nations.

As Dwight D. Eisenhower said, "War is a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.” War is never a solution, merely a delusional escape for the governments of the countries involved. During wartime, governments often prioritise political agendas over the well-being of their citizens, neglecting basic needs such as safety, healthcare, and education. To minimise wars and conflicts, we must prioritise human rights, effective governance, multilateralism, and world peace, addressing root causes and fostering stability. It is essential to advocate for these principles to collectively work towards minimising the devastating impact of wars and conflicts on humanity.
