Write a speech highlighting what you think is the most challenging issue facing the world today, and how Commonwealth values can be used to solve it.
Climate change is like an iceberg, it may not seem serious at first glance, but underneath the surface it is a deadly threat to the world. It is a problem that is rapidly approaching, but few seem to care about it. All government efforts have come to is just the signing of treaties, and no real action has been taken against it
One of the many ways that we can help make a difference to climate change is to reduce our consumption of electricity and water. Therefore reducing our carbon footprint. For example, we could turn off all of the lights and fans when we leave the house. I also try my best to take as short a shower as possible, to ensure that I do not waste water. These are all ways that we can save energy and water. How this would help is that producing electricity requires the burning of fossil fuels, and if we reduce our consumption, we would be requiring less fuels to be burnt and less carbon to be released into the atmosphere. The purification of water also requires a lit of energy, so reducing our usage also helps to reduce our carbon footprint.
Another thing that we can do to slow climate change is not to be too reliant on private transport. Our cars are a huge emitter or carbon monoxide and other greenhouse gasses that are harmful for the environment. To substitute cars, we could use public transportation such as busses and trains to get around. For shorter distances, we could use bicycles to travel. Not only will our carbon footprint be less, we will also be encouraged to live a more active lifestyle.
The last thing that we can do to prevent climate change is to buy less and recycle more. For example, many people usually throw away their phones after just one year of use, contributing to the large amounts of waste generated that has to be burnt in the landfill. Instead, we could consider upgrading our phones less often, like every three to four years instead. We could also consider recycling more items, such as lod cardboard and old paper. This would not only reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill, but will gives these items another use, reducing the need to extract more natural resources.Â
Climate change is an ominous cloud hanging over the world, but if we implement these strategies, we can ensure that climate change will be stopped. Start today to stop climate change.
