At MOE’s Committee of Supply Debate in March 2020, MOE launched the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) for our schools and Institutes of Higher Learning to help students strengthen their digital literacy. This better enables our students, at different stages of their education journey, to acquire the digital skills required to navigate the digital age.
One of the components of the NDLP is the introduction of the Personalised Digital Learning Programme (PDLP) for all secondary school students, whereby every secondary school student will own a school-prescribed Personal Learning Device (PLD) by end-2021.
By equipping students with their own PLD, schools can:
Enhance Teaching and Learning: PLDs harness technology for greater effectiveness in teaching and learning, enabled by teachers’ use of e-Pedagogy to provide active learning experiences for students.
Support Self-Directed and Collaborative Learning: PLDs enable students to learn online according to their needs and interests, and to collaborate with each other, anytime and anywhere.
Support the Development of Digital Literacies: PLDs provide an immersive environment for students to develop the dispositions, knowledge and skills to thrive in the digital environment.
STRENGTHENING DIGITAL LITERACY OF STUDENTS
Watch Mr Ong Ye Kung, then-Minister for Education, explain the four components in the "Find, Think, Apply, Create" framework at the Committee of Supply Debate 2020.
PERSONALISED DIGITAL LEARNING PROGRAMME (PDLP) @ XINMIN SECONDARY SCHOOL
Using ICT in teaching and learning is not new to our school, our teachers have been tapping on a variety of applications such as SLS, Google Classroom and a diverse number of applications to provide a rich, stimulating and interactive environment to engage our students.
With the availability of Personal Learning Devices (PLDs), students will be now be able to stay connected and access information easily, participate actively through digital platforms. The device also enables them to learn actively both within and outside of their classrooms
For this year, all secondary students will be equipped with the Personal Learning Device (PLD) for their learning needs.
HOW WILL YOUR CHILD USE THEIR PERSONAL LEARNING DEVICE (PLD)?
At Xinmin Secondary School, the devices will be used to support the development of digital literacies, support self-directed and collaborative learning, and enhance teaching and learning. The devices will complement classroom teaching by promoting active learning and greater personalization of our students’ schooling experience. Students can also build up their digital literacies in making use of digital tools such as calendaring and note-taking applications to enhance their personal productivity.
The device will provide a seamless learning experience in school and out of school to:
Learn actively in all subjects in school, by participating in Learning tasks / Learning Experiences/ Formative Assessments that require research, digital creation, and collaborative learning in class.
Learn beyond the classroom and after school - Students will also be able to make use of the device for home-based learning. Students can also review past lessons, access digital resources on the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS) platform and other digital platforms (e.g Google classroom) to enhance their learning.
Having a personal learning device, hence, creates opportunities for students to be connected in their learning as they learn to discuss and collaborate with their peers through online digital platforms.
