Courses

B.Sc. Botany

The BSc Botany course aims to give knowledge on different plant groups ranging from algae to angiosperms, their classification and life cycle. In addition to topics like plant physiology, genetics, and environmental botany, the student also learns anatomy and embryology of flowering plants. The study of morphological features of different parts of plants, the terminologies used to describe them, and associated literature aids to understand the specific characters of plants which in turn guides the learner in classifying and identifying the plants in the field.

M.Sc. Botany

The M.Sc. course in Botany is designed to provide an enriching experience in plant sciences by covering a wide range of topics. The department offers MSc by papers and MSc by research. The total number of seats allotted for MSc by papers in Botany is twenty. The students are admitted to MSc on the basis of their BSc botany scores.

Ph.D.

The Department has research programs leading to the Ph.D. degrees. Students are admitted on the basis of their scores in the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) or they have to qualify any of the National or State level Eligibility tests (NET, SET, GATE). After this, the applicants meet the Guide and discuss the research proposal. When the research proposal and the topic of research are finalized, the applicants have to present the proposal before the panel of RAC (Research Advisory Committee) which gives suggestions on the proposal. After making the necessary changes advised by the committee, a final research proposal is prepared and along with other necessary documents, it is submitted to the University for further action. The proposal is looked at by the Botany Research and Recognition Committee (RRC) of the University of Mumbai. The committee finally decides whether to pass or ask for necessary changes in the proposal. If the proposal is passed, the university sends an acceptance letter, thereafter the student registers for PhD by paying the required fees in university and college. The students need to finish the mandatory course work of 6 months after which they carry out their research work.

The topics for research offered by the Botany Department are mostly related to taxonomy, phytochemistry, ecology and other allied fields. Right now (2020-21) there is only one research guide in the Department.
