The public policy that we are proposing is that XCP must have a recycling bin for every trash bin on campus in a one-to-one ratio. Said recycling bins should also be clearly labeled as recycling bins. There should also be at least two composting bins on campus. To get rid of more waste, the XCP cafeteria should cut down their plastic use by less plastic to contain food. For education on sustainability, XCP should implement an environmental advocacy week to educate students on sustainability issues.
We need this policy implemented because of the increasing need for sustainability in the world. With Xavier’s good name of being a trailblazer for young women, we must be updated, educated, and openly confronting this need and leading by example. Overall, this policy will encourage environmental responsibility and and education within the Xavier community.
Funding is always an important component when it comes to campus change. Finding sustainable and easy ways to raise money for a project. XCP Go Green has come up with reliable ideas to raise money for new recycling bins. Technology drives are an easy and effective way of raising money. Students and faculty can bring in their old or unusable tech and it can be turned in at a recycling plant for money that can help support our cause. Another effective method of fundraising in Xavier would be to host a sweans day where the proceeds go to funding the recycling bins. These options are easy and cause little to no disruption whilst still helping a great cause.
Our project encouraging recycling & sustainability education serves the constitution through promoting and making opportunities for morality, health and safety of our citizens. This project promotes and makes opportunities for morality through encouraging students to take care of our environment through recycling, which benefits the lives of everyone and everything around us. XCP Go Green promotes the health and safety of our citizens through making the environment safer to live in through air, water, and outdoor quality. Clearly indicating and sorting Xavier's loads of waste can help to improve our community and take steps to help the greater world. XCP Go Green wants more than just new bins, too. Education surrounding sustainable habits and how to effectively recycle. Learning how to be sustainable is just as important as putting the proper bins, if not more.
The government and civil society, which would be XCP administration and students in this case, should be responsible for implementing this policy. The XCP administration should be responsible for purchasing more recycling & compost bins (specifically well-labelled ones) as well as handling the plastic amounts used in the cafeteria, and XCP students should be responsible for advocating for environmental protection and fulfilling their civic duty to be good citizens by recycling well and not leaving their trash around.
*We are considering XCP to be the government in this situation because it is a private institution
The great thing about recycling is that it is free and very easy once you know what you're doing. Recycling is beneficial to the environment and can make our world a cleaner place. Additionally, it encourages responsibility in all of us. With the proper fundraising, Xavier should have to pay little to nothing in terms of this project.
Really, the only con of recycling is usually the cost. Though there are many good ways to do fundraising for this policy, some may be rather difficult. The funds may take a bit of time to gather and so during the wait for said funds, more sustainability issues may occur.
