Prayer Activities related to Bible translation
If you have a class activity that has been a hit at your class and you want to share the blessing, please email Wendy Lundberg the information. He'll review it and contact you with any questions.
Kate, a missionary kid, and her faithful parrot friend, Mack, are on an adventure to meet friends all over the world.
As Kate and Mack explore new places and cultures, the kids in your church will learn about God's great love for all people and why everyone needs a Bible they can understand.
Kate & Mack crafts, games, recipes, and activities are perfect for kids from kindergarten through 5th grade! Check out the VBS and Sunday School curriculums available.
We invite you to use these in your Perspectives classes as resources to equip the parents to teach kids about the world from a missions-based perspective or alongside a Perspectives class if the host church is offering childcare.
Video Resources
Wycliffe has a number of videos to help your class understand the need of Bible translation with a range of time frames and stories from across the world to choose from. Check out our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/wycliffeusa.
The Wycliffe Perspectives Team especially appreciates these:
The Great Message with Billy Graham
Say "Yes" to What God is Doing
(This was formerly known as Monolingual Demonstration.)
In this fun and challenging activity, the class observes and participates as an instructor demonstrates the use of linguistic tools to identify elements of a target language in which they have no prior knowledge. In just a short time they show how it is possible to construct a grammatically correct sentence in the target language.
This intriguing demonstration takes 20-30 minutes. It shows that if class members approach language learning as a social event, they need not fear crossing language and cultural barriers on their journey to become world Christians.
Works well with lessons 10 and 11, but can be done with any lesson.
Notes:
The instructor will need a person who speaks a different language , one they are not familiar with. Please coordinate ahead of time with the instructor about this to make sure the 'other language' person is present in the class.
A large writing surface (i.e. whiteboard) is needed for the instructor to write discoveries and interim notes during the language analysis.
Instructors available to do a Language Acquisition Demonstration:
Developed by Bruce Rouse, Perspectives mobilizer for the Denver area.
Participants are engaged in a table/group based competition with other tables/groups in the class. Each table/group is given the same set of flags of several countries. A series of statements made by the activities coordinator eliminates all but one correct flag. Each table/group is given a point for having the correct flag face up at the end of each series of questions.
Notes:
Time: Approximately 10 minutes
Please refer to the Open Doors World Watch List to confirm the accuracy of the questions. Please email Mike Moline or Chris Sheeran with corrections/updates to the instructions.
Resources:
Short skits highlighting lesson elements. Participants read from provided skits - minimal "props" required. Great way to engage your class! Skits are identified by lesson so picking a relevant skit is easy. Downloadable PDF!
A great "icebreaker" activity designed to connect people and start conversations.
Feel free to download the draft and edit it to fit your particular class more accurately. Print out one copy per participant. Set aside 5-10 minutes to have people find others who can sign off up to two squares. Consider prizes for those whose squares are filled - one prize for fastest person; and other prizes for those whose squares are all signed off by the end of the time limit. Be creative and make it fun!
Notes:
Time: Approximately 10 minutes
Resources:
Prizes - small candy; any items you feel are appropriate
Before the class, have students put a pin on a world map of a country they have visited.
During class activity prayer time have two or three people briefly share:
What country they visited
One memorable highlight from that visit
One or two prayer requests they personally saw
Then have the class pray for those requests
The instructor/ coordinator can point out that in a similar way William Carey used a world map to broaden his view and inform his praying.
We have three developed prayer activities you are welcome to use in your classes. There is an outlined prayer module with directions anyone can use to facilitate the activity as well as slides that can be used. The first two directly relate to Bible translation while the last one is to cover one of your church's existing missionaries and discover if there are any BT needs.
