Grade 6

Course Selections

Your selections are not guaranteed and only serve as a preference for your course.  We must balance the number of students in each class which may result in your child not getting their primary options.

Below are the exploratory offerings in grade 6.  Exploratory courses meet every other day during one trimester in the school year. You will be assigned these courses as they fit in your schedule.

Performance Literacy

Actors will learn and explore the art of performing through the use of poetry and scripts. Through analysis of poetry students will identify key strategies to engage an audience. They will then dive into the world of performing through the use of scripts. Performers will practice their acting, speaking and presentation skills to build a dramatic performance. The culminating activity of the unit involves students crafting an original script scene to perform for the class.

Executive Functioning

This course will provide students with important skills as they transition into Middle School.  Organization, communication, time management, and others will be practiced and polished during the expanse of this course.

Human Impact

Students will investigate how the global environment impacts Wyckoff, Bergen County, and New Jersey. Initially, students will determine if NJ’s slogan “Garden State” is relevant by considering the history of NJ and the current conditions in the state. Next, students will explore pollution and waste management. This includes the history and remediation of the Passaic River, the Meadowlands, and the Ringwood Mines Superfund site. To understand one option to reduce solid waste, students will design and test a composter. Students will also take part in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Fish and Wildlife Trout in the Classroom conservation program by raising rainbow trout for release.
