Re: 8th grade members of the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs
To: Wyandotte Music Students
Date: May 10, 2023
For the last several years the Roosevelt High School Marching Band (Wyandotte Marching Chiefs) has allowed membership of select 8th grade students during their 8th grade year at Wilson MS. 8th grader participation in the WMC has ranged from full musical participants (attending band camp) to WMC equipment crew members. It is the intent of the WMC to continue to allow the participation of select 8th grade band members in the high school marching band program.
In order for a student to be selected for early participation in the WMC, a student must:
Have the recommendation of the Middle School Band Director(s)
Have shown leadership and maturity in the middle school band program.
Have the means to attend and participate in a vigorous pre-camp, band camp, and season rehearsals.
Be physically capable of performing their role as a Marching Band member.
Meet the requirement for membership of the WMC Director and staff members.
Additionally, it is suggested that students also have:
Taken or Currently Take Private lessons
Successful experiences at the middle school solo & ensemble festival
Parental support (financially and otherwise)
Following the selection process of 8th grade applicants, their membership level will be determined following and assessment of the WMC Director and staff. This assessment will take place during the student’s participation in the WMC spring training sessions as well as their performance in the Wyandotte 4th of July parade rehearsals and performance.
No financial obligation necessary until following the assessment process, and the family is notified regarding the extent of the student’s membership.
Once considered a member of the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs, the WMC Junior Chiefs will be expected to attend all rehearsals, and performances with the RHS Marching Band. (This would exclude any ZERO hour or before school rehearsal) Currently, the WMC Junior Chiefs will not receive a grade or any high school credit for their participation with the RHS Band, however, there full participation is important to the success of the entire band.
