The world has changed. Our daily work and family routines have changed. Our children are home with parents or caretakers, and isolated from their friends and peers. Many of you are working from home without the benefit of face to face contact with colleagues.
Our shared challenge during this prolonged school closure is to preserve and even strengthen our learning communities. We may be confined to our homes, but we can still show we care about each other, our students and their families. We can still learn together from each other and with each other.
The distance learning technology is great! We can use technology to look for new ways to connect, to relate, and to learn. Examples of caring and learning are everywhere and they are an inspiration to us all. They remind us that we are all in this together and that COVID-19 and continuous learning requires us to care about each other. We want to share these incredible efforts with our students and families.
Please take a moment to look at all the wonderful things we are working on...together.
Sincerely,
Jim Shaw, District Administrator
Whitewater Unified School District families,
Planning for returning to school in the fall of 2020 is underway. We want all our children to return to school as safely as possible. Thanks to our teachers and families for their extraordinary efforts to continue learning during the COVID closure. Despite those efforts, we know that distance learning is not as effective as face to face instruction. This is especially true for our youngest, our disadvantaged, our English Language Learners, and our special needs students. As the pandemic subsides, schools will not be the same. Some students, families and staff will be unable to participate fully because of continuing health concerns. Some schedules, routines and procedures will be modified to protect health and safety. Another COVID outbreak may require another closure.
We need your help and involvement in planning for continued learning in the fall, for providing students and families with choices, and for protecting the health and safety of all our students. Continued learning, health and safety, and parental choice will be our guiding values. We are considering three options to begin school. The first option is returning to face to face instruction for as many students as possible. The second option is to continue distance education at home for all children. The third option is a combination of the two, a hybrid model that involves both face to face instruction for some or all children, and with some distance education in the home. We intend to develop each option within the limits of the school board approved budget, with guidance from the Wisconsin Departments of Health and Instruction, and with input from teachers, parents, medical advisors, and community partners.
It is our goal to present three draft options to the School Board on June 22. In July, the District Administration will conduct parent and community focus group(s) to evaluate each option, will survey every parent about their preferred option, and will consider the feasibility of a “high flex’ model to allow parents and students to move between models as conditions change and circumstances allow. After the community input activities are completed, the school board will consider and approve a model for beginning the 2020-21 school year at the July 27 School Board meeting. It is our hope that this timeline will allow for community input and careful, timely consideration of changing health and safety conditions.
We want to focus on student learning. We also want as many students to attend school as safely as possible. We need your help and involvement to achieve the right balance between health and safety concerns and the learning needs of children. Thanks for your help and continuing support.

As we honor our graduates with yard signs, send offs, virtual elementary school parades, drive up graduations, virtual ceremonies and other videos showing them growing with us through the years, we want to express how proud we are of our students. This year did not go as anyone planned, but these young students have persevered and shown they have what it takes to be successful in the world they will soon create. If the young people in the WHS Class of 2020 are any indication, it will be a wonderful world indeed.
Join us for the Virtual Graduation Ceremony taking place on Sunday, June 7, at 2:00 p.m. It will last approximately 1 hour and will be available to watch on the Whitewater High School webpage, the Whitewater High School Facebook page and on Charter/Spectrum Cable Channel 990. The Whitewater Banner facebook page will also have the link. The link will be posted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Washington Elementary got an updated look thanks to the efforts of a couple dedicated staff members. This touching tribute includes one heart to represent every student and staff member at Washington! "When the world stayed apart, Washington stayed together."

Dear WUSD Families,
We hope you’re doing well. As we are nearing the end of April we have much to reflect upon. With this quarantine, we’ve had an unprecedented six weeks that we could not have predicted. Our district and each of our schools has responded to the needs of students and the community through different means appropriate for each level. We’re grateful for our supportive parents and pleased with the collaborations between staff and families that have taken place to support our students. We want to thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work to support our WUSD learners through this ongoing school closure. Now that the governor has extended school closings to the end of the school year, all our teachers have been working hard to put together more lessons and create additional meaningful learning activities designed to ensure that students continue to progress academically. Our teachers have updated their classroom postings and learning opportunities on our district Home-Based Learning Site. Additionally, our elementary families are being sent another packet of printed materials, intended to take our students to the end of the school year. These resources are intended to provide review, extension and enrichment of the content offered at each child’s grade level. Again, there is no pressure to get through all of it or to complete the activities within a certain time frame. These activities are meant for students to use at their own pace, as works best for each child. Therefore, do what works for you as a family and no papers from these packets need to be returned or sent back. We expect these packets will be received by families the first week in May. There will also be electronic versions of the packets posted on the WUSD COVID19 Home Based Learning web page.

We know this is a challenging time for families and this shift in the academic delivery of instruction can be difficult. All our teachers are committed to supporting our students and families as we partner in navigating this unprecedented quarantine. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, the building principal or to Kelly Seichter, the Director of Instruction for the school district. We’re here to help you in any way possible. We wish you all the best as we navigate this school closure and look forward to seeing everyone back at school as soon as safely possible.

On Monday, April 13, WUSD distributed 8,380 meals to children in the community. Each of the 838 children received five breakfasts and five lunches for the week.
This would not be possible without the dedication and direction of Lisa Griep and our incredible school nutrition professionals and custodians: Tootie Behrens, Josie Czerpak, Elizabeth Dempich, Julie Dempich, Pam Duerst, Pattie Germundson, Lisa Hough, Carol Kuchan, Storm Langholff, Joyce Leverenz, John Meyer, and Cindy Ziebarth. Thank you to our partner, Nelson's Bus Service, for providing transportation to make this possible.
Through this federal program, WUSD provides meals each Monday during the COVID-19 closure to all children in the community through age 18.
Lincoln Elementary music teacher, Christine Hayes, put on a series of outdoor concerts for their neighbors to lift spirits during this time. The events are called "Songfest Happenings." Neighbors have pulled up their lawnchairs and sung along with Mrs. Hayes while she strums her guitar over her amplifier.
Lakeview music teacher, Justin Kamp, has been taking advantage of this time at home by learning how to play the accordion! He has been posting videos of his progress on Facebook and shared a song with Lakeview students during their weekly messages (can be seen on the April 10 weekly message on the Lakeview page.) Mr. Kamp is also the fifth grade band teacher for the district! We are sure his students enjoy watching him learn a new instrument right along with them.
While schools are closed due to COVID-19, WUSD will be providing free breakfast and lunch for children in the community 18 years old or younger. The District program is distributing a week's worth of meals each Monday from 11:00 am-noon. Five take-home breakfasts and five take-home lunches will be distributed for each child. Parents, guardians, and caregivers are able to pic up meal bags for all eligible children in the household.

Google Meet (Google Hangout) - a video hangout where classes can interact using audio and video, and a teacher or student can share their screen for presentations and demonstrations
Flipgrid - a video response platform where a teacher can post a prompt, either written or video, and students respond with a video
ALEKS - an individualized math program used by all Pre-Algebra and Algebra I teachers
Membean - an individualized vocabulary program used by many of the English classes
Slack - an online discussion forum where classes can share discussion threads or small groups can message privately
AP Classroom - a platform managed by the College Board for AP students to complete test questions similar to those on the AP exams
Kahoot - a quiz game that can be used in real-time with the teacher or individually as an assignment
And many more…
Two weeks worth of homework resource packets were handed out to all elementary students at the beginning of the school closure. With the continuation of the school closure, our elementary teachers worked hard to put together enough material for their students to last until the end of April.
On Friday, April 4, a small group of members of the Continuity of Learning Task Force gathered (safely) together to copy, stuff envelopes and mail roughly 900 packets to each elementary student in the district! If your child has any questions, or if you did not receive your child's packet, please contact their classroom teacher or Kelly Seichter, Director of Instruction.
